Keiko's own resilience, creating a life in America with energy and purpose, filled with generosity and gratitude for her family's sacrifices and support, is an inspiring story in our increasingly global community.

I loved this book! Keiko's Journey grabs your attention with its compelling perspective and descriptive details of life in Japan during WWII. It is both well-written and moving. I really related to Keiko's strong bond with her dog, Shiro. Definitely an important story worth reading!

What an honest and beautifully written book about overcoming the struggles of war, oppression, family secrets, and loneliness. Kay's story is truly inspiring and enlightening. Her unique point of view is absolutely fascinating.

I want to tell future readers of this book in this way. I read it first when I was 14 or 15. I thought it was a book on how to smartly fight a war. Then I re-read it when I was 28 and it occurred to me that it may be an instruction book on how to navigate an honorable life. Years passed and I recently found it at the bottom of a box in my closet. I read it again at age 56. I realized it has more to offer. If you read this book, you will actively have to replace Sun Tzus' ancient terms and placement of hierarchy and apply them to modern situations and people. Family, bosses, neighbors, employees and the list goes on. It is my belief that this "manual" can help solve minor and major disruptions in life if used correctly. It is a book meant for good.

This is a ~15 page "summary" of the book. Ordered this thinking it was the full text because it doesn't say otherwise in the description.

It’s clear that Mr. Gagliardi is extremely passionate about all things Sun Tzu. Through various repackaged books sold both here at Amazon and through the “Science of Strategy Institute” he set up to sell you Sun Tzu themed board games and videos, he has certainly created a virtual cottage industry of Sunzi-phernalia. In addition, he also offers personalized training packages for up to $1,500 to amp up your ability to unleash the power of Sun Tzu’s system of total and complete victory in all competitive endeavors you face, whether in the boardroom or the bedroom.But all of this aside, how successful is Mr. Gagliardi at his most basic task: competently translating Sun Tzu’s original text, The Art of War? The answer: not very.This book is a complete mess, with unforgivable errors in both translation and general knowledge concerning China and the Warring States era present in almost every verse. In lieu of a laundry list I will give you just a one line example where Mr. Gagliardi clearly shows that he is out of his depth in terms of translation competence. I maintain a database of 30 translations of The Art of War in English that I use to compare and contrast various efforts, and included the screenshot of the relevant verse so you can compare it to how others have approached the text.In Chapter 11, Sun Tzu is concerned that his own soldiers might either break and run or else refuse to support the other flanks of his own army while in battle. To show how this can be remedied, Sun Tzu brings up the example of how a certain snake can provide a valuable lesson for his soldiers. As Gagliardi translates it, the line reads: “Act like an ordinary mountain snake.”From a novice’s perspective, this could be a defensible translation choice. The original Chinese characters for this line are: CHANG SHAN ZHI SHEIf you looked up each character individually via the internet you could definitely make a case that the line could read: ordinary mountain (of) snakeThe problem is that professional translation doesn’t work this way (a one-for-one translation of characters), and you have to understand all of the nuances applicable to how these thoughts are put together, especially when you are talking about a millennia old text written in a language vastly different than its modern equivalent. What a competent Sinologist would easily understand, but Gagliardi obviously didn’t, is that the character CHANG isn’t functioning as an adjective modifying the noun “snake,” but instead is the proper noun indicating the name of the mountain on which the snake resides. So the line should read: “Act like the snake of Mt. Chang”So while Gagliardi is perfectly content in his own ignorance that Sun Tzu is talking about an ordinary snake, what the text is really saying is that he needs his soldiers to be like an EXTRAordinary snake which possesses the magical ability to continue providing support to its endangered other half even after being cleaved into two separate parts.Now if you are looking to really get beyond the basics of the translation (say like someone who is willing to shell out $1,500 for advanced personal lessons) and might be curious where this Mt. Chang is located and why it was relevant to Sun Tzu, you might be surprised. Sun Tzu never actually mentioned Mt. Chang, but instead was referring to a Mt. Heng, where this extraordinary snake supposedly lived (by the way, Sun Tzu gave the snake a name, the Shuairan, a fact that was completely missed by Gagliardi). It turns out that the oldest extant copy of the Art of War was transcribed during the Han Dynasty period. What professional Sinologists know but Mr. Gagliardi might not, is that in classical Chinese there was a prohibition on using characters that were the same as the personal name of the sitting emperor. At around the same time as we believe the earliest version of The Art of War was transcribed, Emperor Wen of Han was sitting on the throne and had a personal name of “Liu Heng” which means that “Heng” would need to be omitted from all texts. “Heng” actually means “Perseverance” and it turns out that “Chang” also carries the meaning of “Perseverance” so Mt. Heng was changed to Mt. Chang to get around this prohibition—an interesting tidbit for your next trivia night.Of course the name change does nothing to impact your understanding of the Art of War, but does illustrate the difference between buying a copy of the The Art of War from a professional Sinologist who understands both the translation issues and can provide relevant historical and philosophical background, and the rank amateur who does this for a hobby and wants to pass off an inferior product hoping you won't know the difference. There are too many professionally done Sun Tzu translations available by qualified individuals (Ames, Griffith, Sawyer, Ivanhoe, Mair, Minford) to justify paying the same amount of money for Mr. Gagliardi’s lackluster effort.You wouldn’t select a surgeon for your triple-bypass surgery simply because he was “passionate” about cutting people open and learned some things on the internet. You would want to select someone who has years of relevant professional experience under their belt, and just as important, board certified. Fortunately, the stakes aren't quite so high when choosing the best Sun Tzu translation, but the same principle should apply. Don't be an ordinary purchaser of this classic text, be an extraordinary one.

And as with every other Tuesday, those darn preschoolers invaded, effectively smashing our vanguard and dividing our force, which spurned a tactical retreat that quickly turned into a rout.While checking Amazon for some first aid supplies to refill our field dressing kits, I came across this book. I spent the next 6 months reading it cover to cover, every night. Then I began to plan.Sun Tzu taught me that in order to overwhelm a force superior in numbers, a great commander must disguise his own numbers and employ subterfuge to sow doubt and terror among his enemy's ranks. To this end, we started a month-long psychological terror operation consisting of pictures of frowny faces drawn in crayon and constant blaring of vintage Barney recordings. The effect of this was to ruin nap time and exhaust the enemy.We then started to probe enemy supply lines, effectively cutting off all supplies of milk. Like nap time, snack time was also ruined. The enemy's desperation began to show, and their decision making processes became clouded. At their weakest point mentally, we infiltrated.12 of our best soldiers dawned velcro shoes and tiny people clothing stolen from distracted enemy backpacks, and slipped in amongst the preschool class. Talk of allegiances of bored grown up dads unifying under a single banner, superior in numbers, claiming the ancient rite of first dibs spread amongst the enemy much as a pox. A rumor of an eminent first strike began to spread. Action would have to be taken.The toddlers assembled their forces, calling in all allies, and marched under the banner of the PTA---a ruse already uncovered by our spy network---in an attempt to cause our forces to believe that the greatest of foes, that of angry and bored suburban mothers, may have been persuaded to take up arms.We created the illusion of superior numbers by meeting this frontal assault head on and melting away several times, followed by a false pincer movement that caused the enemy children to concentrate their forces along their northern flank and slowing their advance. We had taken the high ground including the big slide, and placed scouts on the monkey bars to monitor enemy movements. Through a brilliant plan by one of our commanders, we were able to turn on the soccer field sprinklers the night before and totally saturate the ground. Our enemy's tiny feet bogged down in the mud, causing further chaos and allowing our artillery, consisting of six 40mm water balloon launchers to rain devastation and sheer terror upon the remaining force. Our calvary executed a brilliant flanking maneuver and encircled the enemy, who exhausted, wet, and cranky, sued for peace.Our terms were very favorable: permanent playground dibs and a 30% tariff on all snack imports and seizure of all chocolate milk, with harsh stipulations of wedgies for any violations of terms.We owe this great victory to Sun Tzu. As I peer over the freshly seeded green grass each morning that was once the site of our most grand of victories, and see the tiny enemy faces gazing sadly upon what was once their most holy patch of earth, I smile in satisfaction and gratitude for the Art of War's timeless teachings.And I wait. For our enemy force will soon graduate to elementary school, and a fresh force will take their place again. This battle is won, but the war may very well drag on. Our vigilance is our greatest asset, our hard earned wisdom our only hope. The spirit of Sun Tzu smiles upon us today, but we must never falter.

This is ABSOLUTELY AWFUL. It should say PUBLIC DOMAIN as it is like a copy from someone who took notes off of someone who took notes who took notes off someone who doesn't even write in the English language! It is woefully abridged (to the max) looks like it was not edited or proofread and I loathe it. AWFUL AWFUL AWFUL

The author adds his own knowledge along with Sun Tzu's. And the author's additions are excellent. You might find Sun Tsu on the net in PDF or something, but I wanted a book form and the author was a pleasant surprise for his own good knowledge on these matters. Its a fairly short book, but that it compares so much with modern warfare and intelligence wars that you should get to know it.

Omg, so glad to have discovered this super talented scary smart author. She reminds me of a friend, who should be scared/proud/ flattered. I am a 66 year old snowflake and much of this is "young folks stuff" but damn if I don't relate on so many levels.Buy this book if you want to laugh and maybe a little demonic chuckle.

Yet again, Samantha gives me life while taking my breath away. Not in, like, enlightened gasps--sorry if that's what you thought I meant. More like public guffaws that either made passerby run away from the crazed lady reading a bright yellow book in public with unabashed joy, or slow their pace and lean in to read the title in my chortle-shaking hands.Yes, like Irby I'm a member of the DPC (Dead Parent Club) and DCC (Dysfunctional Childhood Club) and am the last of many kids from a blended family; a trifecta that often infuses both a dark sense of humor and a great appreciation for the little things in a person. But I don't think you need to have a similar history to understand how perfect these short stories are in explaining how a woman becomes who she is and the many faces of love along the way. She is frank about the raw rub of mental illness and physical ailments without begging pity, and tells tales that make you want to read everything else she ever scribbles. And did I mention how funny she is? Holy crap on a cracker, she is FUNNY.I love her blog bitches gotta eat. Her book Meaty was fantastic. But this is, in my opinion, the best Samantha has shared with us yet.

What an amazing collection of essays! Samantha Irby is now one of my favorite writers. Her wit and candor was refreshing and so funny. What struck me beyond the sentences that actually made me laugh out loud, was how honest all these essays are. Samantha had a lot that I relate to. A lot of her insecure paranoia was too reminiscent of my own life. From anxiety, depression, unrequited love, and weight-loss nothing is off topic. I laughed and cringed quite a bit, but that's what made this essay collection so funny and real. Samantha Irby is my new favorite writer.

Yesterday at halfway through this book, I was a little disgusted. Not just the gory toileting details, which I could handle. But Ms. Irby tends to get very, very dark at times. I usually enjoy this brand of darkness, but repeated helpings of that can be, frankly, too much. I am really glad I persisted, though, because all in all this was a good read from a gifted writer. She has a very familiar and down to Earth style that feels very intimate. One minute I felt like we were kindred souls, the next minute I was shocked or repulsed. That is not necessarily a bad thing. It was definitely interesting, but I can see that this book would not be every person's cup of tea.

We've been passing this funny and touching book of essays around the family. Yes, a book of essays is our current Must Read. Irby has persevered through some objectively pretty terrible experiences, and she's spun them into literary gold. Read this book just to discover the feelings and acts she admits to, that you may have done yourself, but can't believe she's actually writing about! Irby writes freely about her issues and problems, as if she doesn't fear judgement, and it works. By book's end you feel like you know her, she's your friend, and you'd stick up for her against her enemies.

Once again, I am lucky to have found a book that is so much MORE than I expected it to be. I thought I had found a collection of well-written and comedic essays. And while this book does fit those parameters, I also found wisdom, and honesty, and profound sadness, as well as the humor of a woman finding herself. This book made me laugh and weepy, but I am also inspired to be honest with myself and to want more for myself."I spent too much time trying to mold myself to fit the romantic ideals of humans who proved themselves unworthy of that effort, and I regret it. Never again will I be with someone who is unwilling to accept me as I am, or who has any desire to mold me into something that makes me uncomfortable."

Awesome reference to tropical trees. Lots of unusual trees I had never heard of.

It is not easy to say something sensible about this book. It is just too overwhelming. As can be expected these days of the Timber Press this is a lavishly illustrated, gorgeously printed and handsomely bound volume. Lay-out is immaculate. All pictures (full color) are of a beautiful quality, or better. An immense amount of information is given for each species (usually one page is devoted to each species). In view of the wealth of information provided, there is a huge potential for error, but the book appears to be remarkably error-free. A curious error is that of using "cv." before a cultivar epithet. The one error-prone category here is that of the author abbreviations in the botanical names: these do not consistently follow the recommended standard and, from time to time, are in something of a mess. Obviously, this is unlikely to trouble those who belong to the book's target audience. The other thing that can be questioned is its aim to cram so many trees into one book. However, for someone wanting a handy (if big) one-volume work on (sub)tropical trees this cannot be recommended enough. It will also make a lovely gift to just about anybody.

Certainly seems authoritative. Lots of information. A nice reference. Plenty of photos. - but:- it does not include Palmae.- the three-page identification section is mostly a list of questions but usually no indication of what to do with the answers.

I had this book on my wish list and got it for Christmas 05. I can't say anything bad about it. Very clear pictures not the line drawings. Very clearly explained and well layed out. I would recomend this book to anybody interested in learning about tropical tree's. It even had a tree that you don't find in a lot of books

although general good, I'd like it to be more cautious about the frost hardiness of each species(The reason I bought it).There are trees that are described as being more tender than they are and other that are more hardy to frosts than in reallity. I mean that USDA zones are sometimes not so accurate for some species describedBut beyond this there is a great amount of information inside it and many pictures also

I have bought several copies for my book store customers here in Panama, and all are delighted with this book. Though a bit cumbersome, it is certainly thorough, and a valuable research tool for anyone interested in the flora of the tropics. It's beautifully illustrated, a book to display as well as study, typical of Timber Press' fine volumes.

An imprescinble issue for all lovers of tropical trees. Very good colour pictures and excellent and short information. The USDA zones assigned to trees sometimes are not accuracy in my experience.

Fairness and Freedom combines four of my favorite subjects: language, political theory, history, and the durability and importance of cultural mores. Fischer looks at the United States and New Zealand through the prism of what Fischer sees as foundational values of the respective societies--the vernacular ideas of liberty in the US and fairness in New Zealand. Fischer draws on his earlier works, Albion's Seed (e.g., he repeatedly references Rawl's mixed north-south Maryland heritage while discussing Rawlsian political theory) and especially Liberty and Freedom, but Fairness and Freedom is something unique, the first book to be published on the history of fairness.Fischer is careful with his language, as should be expected from a historian who already wrote a book entitled Liberty and Freedom. Liberty, freedom, fairness, equity, and justice all have distinct meanings. "Liberty is about the rights and responsibilities of independence and autonomy. Freedom is about the rights and responsibilities of belonging to a community of other free people." On the other hand, "[f]airness...exists in the eye of the beholders--unlike justice, which refers to an external standard of law, or equity, which implies an external and even empirical test of being even, straight, or equal by some objective measure." (For simplicity's sake, I'll stick to liberty and fairness throughout my review.)This dichotomy is in part a sort of linguistic-cultural founder effect--liberty was more common in British usage and played a greater role in the debates of the day during colonization of America, likewise for fairness during colonization of New Zealand. Readers of Fischer's previous work, Albion's Seed, will be well aware of American colonists' views on liberty. These founding ideas were affected by and in turn amplified by contact with the respective indigenous populations. The massive American frontier also played a role in the divergence. America and New Zealand went on to have dramatically different experiences with immigration, the women's movement, racism, and the Progressive movement. Fischer addresses each in depth. These sections are in general excellent short summaries of important chapters in American and Kiwi history.The freedom and fairness paradigm is particularly evident in foreign policy. America has from its founding pursued a largely unilateral course while New Zealand has always been a strong proponent of multilateralism. One could argue that these approaches were inevitable for the world's largest economy and a very small and vulnerable one, but America was acting unilaterally in foreign policy long before it became the world's largest economy and New Zealand was much more aggressive in pushing multilateralism than it needed to be. I found New Zealand's actions during and in the run up to WWII to be particularly strong examples of its commitment to multilateralism. While Europeans appeased and Americans willfully ignored, Kiwis pushed for an aggressive response to Italian and Japanese belligerence. When war broke out, they made the shocking decision to leave most of their troops in the Middle East, judging Germany to be the greater threat and relying on Australia and the United States to wage war in the South Pacific. Obvious differences in approach between the two allies persisted during the Cold War. New Zealand's "leaders spoke eloquently of international justice and the rule of law. The purposes of the United States were case more in terms of a struggle for liberty and freedom against a Communist aggressor."Fischer rounds the bases with the Great Depression, the military, and reform and restructuring. The New Deal surely represented a turning point in the role of the federal government in America, but Fischer shows us that its expansion during the Great Depression did not remotely compare to that of New Zealand, which became one of the most socialistic countries in the world during that period. America and New Zealand have different military traditions and experienced different patterns of reform and restructuring (although government reform in both cases curiously came from the left).The format is not quite the drag on Freedom and Fairness it was on Albion's Seed but ,devoted to a methodical approach, Fischer sometimes both veers from his thesis and resorts to regurgitating textbook history. The section on the Progressive movement in the US is particularly disappointing from this perspective. He does little to demonstrate just how antithetical to American ideas of liberty it was, how it co-opted (or did not co-opt) the language of liberty and freedom, and how opposition to the Progressive movement was rooted in concepts and used the language of liberty and freedom. The Progressive movement's abhorrent record on race and gender gets a single throwaway line.Fairness and Freedom ends with a summary of the virtues and vices of liberty and freedom (in America) and fairness (in New Zealand). For example, Fischer criticizes the opposition to all new taxes in the name of liberty in America and the Tallest Poppy Syndrome in New Zealand. But Fischer sees liberty and fairness less as opposites than as "two ideas that are useful as ways of reinforcing each other." He thinks Americans would do well to add another splash of fairness to their healthy dose of liberty and likewise with New Zealand and liberty and fairness.The notes, etc. take up over 40% of the Kindle version. They include: an appendix (discussing scholarly work on fairness in other fields), notes, list of maps, list of illustrations, acknowledgments, index (indexed to the print version). Fairness and Freedom is heavily illustrated--the list of illustrations is 20 pages long in Kindle version. Unfortunately, the maps are usually quite hard to read.

Fischer’s argument that because New Zealand politicians talk a lot about “fairness” shows some societal dedication to being fair shows the intellectual depth of a seven year old, like a politician would never couch pandering as fairness. Fischer acknowledges himself that fairness “is in the eye of the beholder” yet can’t intellectually anticipate how a governments imposition of one man’s (or groups or majorities’) view of fairness can be inherently unfair. Thats how he can worship FDR, the man that interred millions of U.S. citizens, or woodrow wilson, a racist and devout segregationist, as icons of fairness, while other fair people may disagree. Another example fischer gives for America’s unfairness? the navy seal motto “never fight fair.” Is it “fair” to send a soldier into battle trained and equipped and supported less than optimally so as to “fight fair” with a weaker opponent? The idea is absurd. Fischer acknowledges that fairness can change by perspective and circumstance. Thats why we strive for equality under the law, and leave notions of fairness (as fischer defines it) to free people to decide. Certainly we can all agree that America has fallen short of this lofty goal at times and perhaps always will. It is also why perfect fairness can never be achieved in America OR New Zealand, because ultimately fairness counts on all of us being fair to everyone from all perspectives at all times, an impossible task for inherently imperfect people.

What I liked: Fischer compiled a well organized "compare and contrast" between the development of the US and NZ. From that, I learned a lot about NZ in both an absolute and relative sense. As a first time visitor to the country, that provided a very good backdrop for the trip.What I didn't: The framework ("NZ = fairness and US = freedom") became quite tired after a while and candidly a bit forced. No matter the topic, the big reveal was the same, which is a little too simplistic for my taste. Candidly, the data/quotes/etc. started to feel cherry-picked to prove a hypothesis vs. an unbiased representation of the data.On a similar vein, Fischer layers in more than his fair share of value-judgments in what purported to be largely an objective compilation. It's pretty clear that Fischer has an affinity that leans toward socialism / progressiveness. I could care less what his politics are - I was simply hoping for an objective presentation of information that would educate me on NZ. Instead, I felt like I was at a coffee shop meeting of liberal academics who live in their own bubble and don't even realize it. I would have prefer much less editorializing.Net-net, you could read the first 20 pages on the book, stop there, and get what you want from it. If you read the whole thing (as I did), then I suspect you'll walk away bored and disappointed (as I did).
