Kathy Hudson's On Walnut Hill: The Evolution of a Garden is one of those rare garden books that does far more than tell the story of a showcase garden. Hudson's spare prose, combined with award-winning landscape photographer Roger Foley's lush photos, paint a verbal and visual history of this spectacular garden, which utterly transformed a sunny hillside near Baltimore over the course of 46 years.It helped, of course, that the young couple who bought the house and grounds in 1969 -- and did all the work themselves for years -- was able, later, to fund what started as a dawn-to-dusk, weekend hobby into what ultimately became their life's passion and work.It also helped that early on they began working with a European garden designer who was one of the pioneers advocating the replacement of staid, static rectangular patches of lawn and flower beds with sumptuous curvilinear sweeps of perennial plantings and ornamental grasses.Designer Kurt Bluemel laid out an overarching plan for A.C. and Penney Hubbard's sunny, two-acre site: an evergreen background, a middle ground of shrubs like rhododendrons, viburnums and azaleas, and a foreground of annuals and perennials. I curled up one afternoon during the recent blizzard with a cup of tea and this book and was lost to the world for the next several hours. The photography is stunning and moves effortlessly between botanical studies of plants and portraits of the garden as a whole. Kathy Hudson's prose poems are lovely and I imagine I will reread them as the season the change for many years to come. The book tells the story of a family as well as the garden and it makes one want to start working on one's own garden immediately.I recommend this book to gardeners and lovers of gardens of all stripes, those who are always mucking about in the dirt and armchair gardeners alike. While the story is grounded in Baltimore and is delightful to read for those acquainted with the city, my aunt, who has no particular connection to Baltimore, also loved the book.

We used these on a recent 10-day trip to London and found them great to get us out to new neighborhoods. We've explored many of the usual tourist destinations on previous trips, so we focused on lesser-known areas like Camden, Spittalfield, Hackney, etc. We rarely followed the directions, actually, just read the descriptions and got a feel for where we were headed. They worked great for this, and we explored areas we might otherwise have overlooked.I actually think that's their best purpose, since the info on them isn't nearly detailed enough to be true walking tours. There's virtually no info on what you're looking at, why it's significant, or any history or background. So while these cards give you a good start and plenty of inspiration, they're definitely not a substitute for a good tour guide or a guide book.

These cards are great....small, and in walking order for many, many walks throughout London. Took them to London in March, and though have been many times, found them very useful, as maps of local areas outlined in the walks, and for following the actual walks. Great product, and one does not look like a tourist jostling through a big fold-up map....discreet! 2018 will be the third time we use these cards.We are familiar with most of London; still these cards are handy and outline everything one would schedule to see and many places that are on the way of the walk that are also great to visit or see. If you are not familiar with London these cards are fantastic because taking two or three with you for your designated walk is much more discreet than holding and unfolding a map. The convenience of slipping them into a pocket and pulling them out as needed combined with all the information they contain is a priceless asset to a walking tour on your own!

We just got back from London, and I have to say this set of cards was ESSENTIAL to finding our way around without looking like tourists! Since each walk starts and ends at a tube station, it helped us use that system very well indeed. OK, so there's no way you can use ALL the cards on the average vacation, but the set will pay for itself with the money and especially TIME you will save by not expecting a taxi or a bus to get through the eternal traffic. Buy this instead of a map, and put on your walking shoes. We really used these cards and LOVED them.

These are great, even if you just take one or two walks. It was among the few of the physical tourist items we took, and we used it several times to get off the beaten path. A little heavy if you are trying to travel light and take all the cards, but once there you can just pull whatever card or two you may want for the day. Only problem was one walk to Holland Park for which, due to current construction, it was difficult to find the park via the route on the card, but the neighborhood was interesting nonetheless.

Excellent info. Great little maps in a compact format. I love these things (and I have several city-versions of them.) Sometimes phone maps are hard to see on a sunny day. These solve the problem. Pull out a few that cover an area where you're headed and leave the rest at your hotel for another day. These are excellent, durable, informative and fun. They also make a great trip-planning resource!

Took the appropriate cards with me when visiting sites (museums, gardens,etc.) and was able to more throughly explore the areas and neighborhoods around me. Found thing I didn't even know were there. Fun!

This card deck, like all the others produced by this publisher contains some interesting twists and turns. However, it's weight makes it something that you'll need to lug around on a trip, that is, unless you pare down the deck prior to travels. A consideration to keep in mind.

I would recommend these set of cards for any city to those whose visit a city for the first time and doesn't want to pay extra money for a tour and like walking around. From the popular touristy sites to the places that might have been one when you visit town but It would have been great to visit are included in these cards.

I am so grateful to Jana Deleon for letting other authors write novellas for her Miss Fortune Series. It tides us over until we get another novel from Miss Deleon. I am addicted to this series. This novella starts out fast and funny. I've come to love the main characters, Fortune, Gertie, & Ida Belle. Little sniplets from their lives and the adventures that come their way in these novellas adds to the richness of the story and background laid out by Jana Deleon. You will not be disappointed in this story. Enjoy.

Fast, fun read. Don't eat while reading a Miss Fortune book, inhaling to laugh can be hazardous to your health and spitting food and/or drink can be hazardous to your reading device! Like many of the Miss Fortune books, when finished, I wished for even more. Glad the original author has elected to allow other writers to expand on her creation. So far, all the other authors who've added to the Miss Fortune stories that I have read have kept true to the original characters and provided delightful accents. Jana Deleon created a winner and her sense of humor can't be matched, but these add-ons come close.

This story has a good plot and storyline. The characters are truer to the originals created by Jana DeLeon, although they are still edgier and more emotional. I liked this story significantly better than the first one as the main characters treat each other better in this one. Ms. Hearn made me believe this story could have taken place in the world of Miss Fortune. I will continue reading the other books in the series.

I really love all of the Miss Fortune books. In these little mini books we get to keep up with the bunch at Sinful, while waiting for the next book. All of the authors she lets write these books they really keep up the Miss Fortune group. In this one Fortune and Ida have to go to a Anger Mang and find as usual nothing is as it should be. I won;t spoil the plot read the message, but it's great. I have just about all of the Miss Fortune books. This is a real person writing a real personal review. I love the books, please keep them coming But please let Fortune have a romance with Sheriff Carter PLEASE,

A fun, fast and descriptive story with Fortune, Ida Belle and Gertie. Gertie mouths off to Celia, the alleged mayor of Sinful and gets tangled up in the flag pole rope. Fortune goes to the aide of Gertie and mouths off to Celia. Celia calls a local judge and Gertie and Fortune get sent to a Camp Happy Frog for a three day anger management course. Nobody at the camp are who they appear to be. This is a wild story and well worth the read.

It is great Jana Deleon allows other writers to write Miss Fortune adventures. Shari Hearn is one of the better writers. Her stories stays true to the relationships between the characters and Sinful traditions.

I rarely love novellas, but this was a very good riff on the world of Miss Fortune developed by Jana DeLeon. Funny and entertaining in a tightly written novella.Books based on 'The Wold Off .....' vary very widely in their quality, but they are reminiscent of the days when multi-author series were popular in the Fantasy genre.

Another fantastic book in the Miss Fortune Kindle Worlds from Ms. Hearn, proving what a talented storyteller she is. Great story/plot and heavy on the laughs with all our favorite characters from Sinful. Loved it and didn't want it to end.
