House of M’s dialogue is sub-par and at times frustrating. This kind of stuff normally isn’t an issue for me. Good dialogue shouldn’t stand out. What I mean by that is that good dialogue will seamlessly transport you into the world of the story and make you forget that you’re reading speech bubbles. This is not the case in House of M. The dialogue stands out in a bad way. What could have been said in five words seems to be painstakingly drawn out in twenty words. A lot of the dialogue is just the characters repeating themselves over and over again. There’s one instance in particular where a character literally repeats “They’re going to kill her!†About five times within three panels (I get it, they’re going to kill her. I heard you the first time). Or when characters inexplicably repeat each other for no apparent reason (example: Character 1 says “That’s what mommies do†character 2 replies “That’s what mommies doâ€). This kind of stuff happens frequently throughout the story. It seems like such a minuscule detail but once you see it, you won’t be able to un-see it, and then that’s all you’ll see.Bendis really doesn’t allow the art to do any story-telling. At times, a character in the story will explain what we (the reader) have just seen through the art’s visual story-telling. Some of the best parts of any graphic novel are those amazing quiet details in the artwork that tell a story that a thousand words couldn’t tell. This book is the opposite of that; Bendis uses a thousand words to explain what’s happening over awesome artwork. Truly annoying.
So, imagine that for once, the opressed becomes the opressor. The people in disadvantage becomes the priviledge. What makes you think it will happen? A paradise on Earth? Or maybe, another flavor of Hell?After a mental breakdown makes Scarlet Witch twists reality to fit a more "friendly" vision of her father's ideals, the world is turned upside down. For the worse.When I was reading this comic, I couldn't help but feel it sometimes mirrors our modern age to an scary degree. The best part, is that it does so by showing us instead of telling us.Although the world created by Wanda Maximoff seems pure at the beginning, it slowly turns into an undesirable reality with missery imposed upon those whom didn't deserve none of it.Although it's short, it's definitely an amazing story and addition to any collection.
Overrated book. For the cast it has, I was hoping for a more interesting read. They also let out a few of the more intriguing components to keep this a short read, such as Black Panther and Magneto's encounter. The story is very thinly focused on just the core impact of Wanda's actions and neglects some of the cooler ramifications that I remember reading or hearing about when this was coming out as individual comics on a monthly basis.
It is hard to describe this book without giving away too much of the plot.What do you do when a very powerful superheroine loses her grip on reality and becomes dangerous enough to destroy the world as we know it? Mr. Bendis, accompanied by Mr. Coipel's excellent artwork take us for a tour. In the fictional world of Marvel, the topic is debated thoroughly, and interestingly, in "The House of M." If you are familiar with the X-Men and the Avengers, you might think you can predict who will be on what side of the debate. But I, for one, was surprised. Fortunately for us, Mr. Bendis explores the possibilities without risking our morality. These are superheroes. Of course they won't kill her. But what exactly can they do?After closing the book, one can only be pleased these characters are fictional, and hard choices like these don't need to be made.
Read this on my 7"kindle fire HD. I'm not very familiar with the X-Men characters, so keeping track of all the characters was a little tricky at times. In a nutshell, the Scarlet Witch has altered reality, creating a very different world where mutants are dominant and homo sapiens are the minority. Wolverine is the only one who remembers how things once were and tries to put the world back to how it was.I thought the story was good and the artwork was excellent. My only complaint is that a few of the panes were small, even with the panel view, making some of the text very difficult to read...not all the time, just here and there.Overall I highly recommend this graphic novel.
I have to say, I love this graphic novel. Watching Wanda go through so much and have a break from reality was simply amazing. The artwork is amazing and the story line forever changed the world for mutants.
House of M revolutionizes the Marvel Comic World and, in a way, starts the X-Men series over again. While House of M does not move particularly quickly (not many flashy battle scenes), it certainly adds a lot of psychological depth to many familiar characters like Wolverine, Magneto, Quicksilver, Spiderman, Scarlet Witch, Hawkeye, and a host of others, as we the readers witness what the world would be like if each mutant had their ideal life. Even more interesting, perhaps, is the round-about way the social schism of mutant vs human changes in this altered world. With mutants now on top, humans experience the same persecution placed upon mutants in the non-House of M world. I rarely read comics just for their fight scenes (although who doesn't love them!), so for someone into more of the psychology and social aspects Marvel brings to the table, House of M is a perfect fit. As has been said in many other reviews, it's also a perfect starting point for new readers. Highly recommended, and Excalibur-House of M Prequel, Decimation- The Day After, Son of M (this chronicles the aftermath of Quicksilver), and the subsequent Civil War cross-over event are also recommended.HUGE SPOILER!*****Keep your eyes and ears open, though, because House of M and the Decimation's effects are far from over. The Scarlet Witch returns in Civil War: New Avengers #26!!!!
