If you're looking for anything like Tomasi's supersons, you're out of luck. Jon is mostly unchanged, but Damien is not Damien. The comic panels don't flow, I found myself more than once completely confused about what was going on. The story jumps all over the place. It seems that Pearson has never read a DC comic in his life.

As someone who is very into comics and is eager to share that my kids, I really WANTED to like Super Sons: The PolarShield Project. I'm very familiar with the Jon Kent and Damian (here called Ian) Wayne characters and I completely support the idea of creating comics aimed at younger age-groups. (The reality is, the main purchasers of the comic-book series are college age or over and very few of these products are truly aimed at kids.)Unfortunately, I can't recommend this book. The art is amateurish and the coloring, in particular, is muddy and dull. I don't know if that's the fault of the colorist or maybe it's the paper it was printed on, but there's nothing fun or exciting about the art in this book, which is a pretty major drawback. Beyond that, the writing is poor. The author has written numerous books but I think this is his first comic-book script and it shows. The dialogue does not flow well at all and he isn't able to capture the characters' unique "voices." Writing comics is very different from writing novels - in terms of how to write a script and also in terms of the pacing - and Ridley Pearson hasn't quite got the transition yet.All in all, this is not a very good book. If you're looking for something to get young kids interested in comics, I'd really recommend those early Ultimate Spider-Man trade paperbacks by Bendis and Bagley or the original Runaways trade paperback by Brian K. Vaughan. But Super Sons: The PolarShield Project just isn't very good and I don't think it's going excite young readers.

As part of DC's Zoom imprint, Super Sons: The Polarshield Project introduces young readers to Jonathan Kent and Damian (although in this story he prefers to go by Ian) Wayne as they uncover an environmental conspiracy that could possibly destroy the world. The story focuses on the two young men who happen to be the sons of Superman and Batman, respectively, and their friends Candace (who has a secret family history) and Tilly, a go-getter who helps Jon.With Superman on a mission to Mars and Batman looking for answers on his own, the four youngsters team up to find out what's really going on with coastal flooding, the Polarshield Project (which will hopefully save the planet from environmental destruction), and a bizarre number of illnesses that seem to be tied to Sage Foods. The kids face environmental enemies and their dark leader, Avryc, in an attempt to discover what's really going on in the city of Wyndemere and to find out if they can stop the bad guys without the help of Superman or Batman. The story moves along at a very quick pace. It's so quick, in fact, that I had to go back and reread certain panels of the story. I'm sure that most younger readers (the book is aimed at 8-12 year olds) will have to do the same. Also, some of the panels are a bit confusing to follow at times. The artwork by Ile Gonzalez if colorful but somehow subdued at the same time. The art is cleanly drawn and fits the age range that it is directed towards. Author Ridley Pearson does a decent job of allowing the story to flow as well, but the dialogue is definitely aimed at the lower end of the targeted age of the readers. This book sets up the second volume with an explosive cliffhanger. I'm sure that many young readers will want to check out the next chapter of this story, but I also think that many of them might feel as if the writing is a tad too young for their reading level. That is why I'm giving this book three stars. It's a bit confusing at times and the writing could be just a little bit more intelligent.

The above 4 star rating should really be a 3 1/2, and that's based as much on faith in Pearson as the quality of this volume. It goes almost without saying that Ridley Pearson is not only one of our better adult writers, but also a top writer of "kid" novels; The "peter/starcathchers" series he wrote with Dave Barry is, arguably, one of the major YA serties of the last decade.Which is why it's not a pleasure to note that this, his first graphic, is at least somewhat disappointing.Don't get me wrong; it's a solid, professional jpb, ably illustrated and interesting enough to get you to come back for more... BUTFirst: It's listed a Book 1 in the series without any indication of how many "books" this particular tale will require. And it will require at least ONE more as the tale ends rather abruptly on a cliffhanger, not unlike a TV pilot. And like, said pilot this first book does little more than introduce its characters and premises. Only, at the end, we still have only the sketchiest knowledge of these characters (too much faith is put on our just accepting them on said faith based on "who" they are) and really not much more than an outline of the premise. But, as I say at the outset, this IS Ridley Pearson, so I'll hang for the ride at least for a little while longer

Review

Shmuley Boteach s answer to Jews For Jesus is to write a book that might well have been entitled Jesus For Jews. Always controversial, Shmuley s new book will stimulate debate among Jews, between Christians and Jews and by all people who care about ultimate issues of faith. Written with Shmuley s usual candor, humor and accessibility, Kosher Jesus is sure to change and open minds. What more can you ask of a book. Alan Dershowitz, author of Trials of ZionFor years I've been asking my friend Shmuley to write this book. Kosher Jesus is one of his most important, thought-provoking, and stimulating books. I celebrate this book and its potential to provoke dialog and elevate our high ideals of unity and understanding. Cory A. Booker, Mayor of NewarkTalking openly and honestly about Jesus and how others view him can only bring people together. This book is a must-read for anyone willing to venture slightly out of their comfort zone in their journey toward real understanding and peace.Glenn Beck, #1 New York Times bestselling author and founder of GBTV.com It is tragic that two great religions that worship the same God, cherish the same Scriptures and affirm the same moral code have been so antagonistic to each other for so long. May this book help to heal that breach. --Rabbi Harold Kushner, Author of When Bad Things Happen To Good PeopleShmuley in his own unique, iconoclastic, and controversial way, hits a home run with his new courageous book, Kosher Jesus. While showing understanding for the negative stereotypes many Jews especially European born have of Jesus, Christians and Christianity, he cuts through those perceptions and urges Jews and Christians to take a fresh look at the person of Jesus and to reclaim him for themselves in a truer, more genuine form. The mostly negative views Jews and Christians have had of one another over the centuries were certainly shaped by the fratricide that marked our relationship. It is high time they be revisited. Undoubtedly, not a few Rabbis will be outraged by this book. But certainly this Rabbi a colleague, friend, admirer, and fan of Shmuley will defend his thesis and many, if not most, of his points and view the opposition as Shmuley s red badge of courage. Given the advances that have been made in Christian-Jewish dialogue since the 1960s it is essential that both communities take another look at this central subject. And this book does just that. Kosher Jesus is essential reading for anyone seeking a truer understanding of who Jesus the Jew from Nazareth really was and the enormous contribution he made to the world. This courageous and thought provoking book is a breath of fresh air and major contribution to Jewish and Christian perceptions of Jesus. I hope it s read widely and changes attitudes in both communities. Rabbi Yechiel Z. Eckstein, Founder and President, International Fellowship of Christians and Jews Rabbi Boteach (Kosher Sex: A Recipe for Passion and Intimacy) is one of the more high-profile religious figures in the country and has an admitted knack for self-promotion. His latest book reviews the life and teachings of Jesus of Nazareth from the perspective of both Jewish understandings and contemporary scholarship and identifies Jesus as a Jewish leader, patriot, and even martyr. Many Christian scholars of the New Testament now would agree with him that Jesus lived and died a Jew and that our reconstruction of him as the founder of a new faith is dubious and posthumous, so no surprises there, but Boteach s name and the skill of his argument should draw readers in. Verdict Don t be misled by the media fizz around his name; Boteach writes with clarity, force, and intelligence, and his Kosher Jesus is an excellent resource for parish libraries, Jewish worship communities, individual seekers, and all interested in the historical Jesus. --Graham Christian, Pelham, MA --Library Journal Xpress Reviews: Nonfiction | First Look at New Books, January 27, 2012This informed and cogent primer on Jesus of Nazareth, Boteach, rabbi and author of the international bestseller Kosher Sex, takes a brave stab at re-evaluating Jesus through an intensive look at the New Testament and historical documents. In what is sure to be controversial, Boteach asserts that contradictions in the New Testament regarding who bears responsibility for Jesus crucifixion, Jesus feelings toward the Jews as well as issues like Jesus divinity and the question of Judas existence, prove that editors of early texts chose to distort that Jesus was, in fact, a beloved member of the Jewish community who rebelled against Roman brutality, not Jewish law. Boteach reiterates that although he does not believe in Jesus as Messiah, he hopes that a new look at Jesus as a man who lived and died as an observant Jew will help eliminate anti-Semitism, establish good will between the faiths and strengthen Judeo-Christian values. This well-researched analysis will certainly reopen intrafaith and interfaith dialogue. --Publishers Weekly

I can't try to compete with some of the other reviewers. I feel that it is extremely important for all Christians to know that Jesus was Jewish. In recent years, more books have been written to inform us of this. I was Catholic, and above every crucifix there were the letters: INRI Jesus of Nazareth King of the Jews. I can't tell you how many Christians have argued with me about this.Anyone who studies Acts and Paul's writings should realize that one group who was closer to Jesus, the original apostles were Jewish. Of course, Paul was Jewish, but went to the gentiles to convert them. And this is where the animosity came in between James, Jesus's, brother and Paul. But, as the Rabbi gives credit to Hyam Maccoby, he should. His book was written awhile ago dealing with the same subject, but not in the same manner as Rabbi Shmuley.Christians need to learn about all the horrors that were done to Jewish people, in the name of religion. Empathy and compassion for these acts, would help our world a lot.At the end, I felt Rabbi Shmuley become more of a lecturer than a writer. This is where I felt the Book could have been better. But, for those unaware of Jesus's Jewish heritage, the book could be helpful. No matter what, Jesus is not just the most famous Jewish person, but the most famous person who walked the earth.

Interesting book that made me aware of the threatened uneasiness about Christianity that is only natural for the Jewish faith. For God to do anything "new" and actually fulfill the scriptures would mean change in something they hold firmly to. The great lengths the rabbi goes to in explaining away the new testament and then referring to it for proof actually affirms my view of God's plan for the world from it's beginning. I kept wondering, as I read it, how Boteach might explain God's promise to bless all nations through Abraham. I am quite sure he could never allow that God could have done it with a son born as a man.

While an entertaining and imaginative read, this book neither represents Perspectives of Judaism nor Christianity accurately, and is rather an exercise in equivocation. Much of the "history of Jesus" detailed here is a work of pure fiction built on nothing but imagination and a few cherry picked verses that appeal to Rabbi Shmuley's sensibilities. There is a startling lack of citation of historical sources throughout the book, leaving the reader to wonder if Rabbi Shmuley got it all out of his own head. The appeal to pluralism rings hollow after the lengths to which Rabbi Shmuley goes to explain why none of the attributes of Jesus held most sacred by Christians are valid or authentic. Sorry Shmuley, you can't tell a group of people that the foundation of their faith is entirely faulty but then encourage them to stay in that faith. What true Jewish Rabbi would actually encourage someone to follow teachings that they believe are false? This demonstrates a lack of integrity which is frankly disturbing in someone called "America's favorite Rabbi".However, for the uncritical reader looking for another reason to claim that all religions are the same, while still being mostly wrong, this book will certainly help you maintain your preconceived notions. For readers with a genuine interest in this subject: There are better books out there on the subject of the history of Jesus and his Jewish identity, which are written with a great deal more intellectual, academic, and religious integrity. Read those.

I like the book by Biotech. I used it on my thesis entitled: Those Who Heard It First: The Political Implications of the Sermon on the Mount to Jesus' Jewish Audience as found on Amazon too. I think it adds good details to second temple research. It gave some good research points I could use. Although a modern source for academic research, the current trend is to show the jewish origins of Jesus.

I'm glad I read this. I've spent the last few years, as a Christian, reading more critical analysis / historical perspective / etc. takes on the NT. I've often thought "how would these events (described in the Gospels and NT) have been received/understood as a 1st century Jew, since that's who was saying/doing these things and that's who they were talking to?"Well, the Rabbi has given me just such an insight. I don't agree with some of his core premises (and he doesn't give me enough background on how he came to the core premises to help me out here) but hearing the Gospel stories and messages filtered through an Orthodox (I think?) perspective was sooooo interesting! It actually helped me understand some passages of the Gospels that I'd found baffling before. And, oh, his take on Paul! Well, I don't agree with all of it but it is a very worthy read. There were aspects of the writing that suggested the author doesn't have as full an understanding of Christianity (or Christians) as I wish he had, given what he's writing about and that half his audience is likely to be Christians. He also seems to think that the vast majority of Christians (or at least the most interesting ones) are either at the Roman Catholic end of the spectrum of the Evangelical end of the spectrum. He seems to ignore the vast numbers of is living and learning in between those two poles. It is not a perfect book but I truly appreciated the chance to see texts that are hard to see with fresh eyes (having read or heard them for more than 50 years) through fresh eyes.
