Other reviews have covered the brilliant writing - sharp and engaging style, spot-on imagery and language, excellent flow - and discussed the relevant plot points, so in lieu of more summary, here is a general list of reasons why I've completely LOVED this book. Please proceed with caution if you haven't read it, as there will be some vague spoilers ahead:1) I have read - and, don't get me wrong, enjoyed - plenty of historical fiction in which the past serves as a sort of nostalgic fantasy backdrop. In this book, however, history feels immediate and alive, easy to imagine because similar moral dilemmas exist today - and not just in vague universals, but in the very definition of social responsibility and the two-party system conflicts that keep echoing into the present. The book covers a wide enough slice of the social strata in its two protagonists to illustrate the profound differences in their social positions and associated mindsets via daily struggles, observations, and decision-making; the devil's in the details, and the details presented here are SUPERB. And the history they each embody, while entwined in their love story, is told through sharp contrast of their respective positions and outlooks, which are brilliantly presented: it's lived experience, unsentimental, realistic, and easy to relate to (the politics at the core not being very different from today's, after all). The writing is beautifully done and never feels like a lecture - rather, characters take note and have streams of thought that fit their perspective, and their voices feel personal and truthful, whether we agree with them or not. Example: at one point in the book, Silas mentally lists the moments in which he had noticed Dominic's privilege, drawing readers' attention to the casual unfairness too often taken for granted simply due to Dom's place in the social hierarchy. Through Silas, we get to question the origins of that privilege and the systems that maintain it, even as we observe certain limitations imposed on Dom by his position.2) ...which brings us to the next point: just like Dominic's privilege and wealth are not presented uncritically, Silas's seditious work is not a fairytale either: this isn't revolution painted is broad strokes of noble poverty and high spirits kept pure by the ideal of a better world. It's dangerous, difficult, and exhausting physically and emotionally. And the movement (just like the social club Dominic belongs to) is made up of people, and thus rife with individual imperfections and flaws. In one scene Silas dryly observes: "It was hard to keep up the fight for the freedom of your fellow man when your fellow man was a bastard." This story takes a complex, adult, clear-eyed look at the realities of a lifetime of social struggle, which has genuinely moved me more than words can say and turned Silas into one of my all-time favorite literary characters. And - hopefully this is not too big of a spoiler - it also takes a good hard look at the challenge of *surviving* a lifetime of social struggle, and finding compromises that can allow for future continuation of such work without costing the revolutionary his life, liberty, or independence. It's the kind of believable victory that revolutionaries rarely get in books; oh, how I wish there were more such stories! (Btw, the scene between Silas and Richard near the end is *amazing* - and I'll just leave it at that. Read it and see for yourself.)3) I'd recently described K.J. Charles as "a witch of a wordsmith" and, well, I stand by that 100%. The dramatic tension in this book is consistently high and perfectly pitched throughout; even during "downtime" in between immediate threats, the characters are aware it's only the calm before inevitable storm. I can't remember the last time I was so deeply engaged with a story - although that's putting it rather mildly; this experience felt like reading inside a powder keg by candlelight, and I could NOT put it down until 2am. This is your OFFICIAL WARNING: don't start this book unless you've got enough time to finish it the same day! Most of the tension comes from the masterfully woven plot, but there is also the inherent charge of romance that feels impossible yet somehow happens anyway - and the author is an expert in turning impossibility into a happy ending, getting her characters to learn and grow and change enough to be able to get together, but not to compromise their integrity in the process. Silas and Dom start out as good men on opposing sides; and they end up still as good men, still on opposing sides, but in love with each other, and both willing to change their lives for the sake of their relationship / in order to live more honestly with all they've learned.4) Even if you're not into BDSM, the book does a good job of communicating why it works for the characters. Further, I truly appreciate that this love story subverts the genre trope of a dominant teaching the submissive; Silas and Dom begin their relationship a little lost and with limited experience, and get to learn from and with each other how to make the kink work for both. Also, their first kiss is one of the hottest things I've read in my life. But fundamentally, this is a story about two characters learning to love - to recognize how much they care, realize that their feelings are worth fighting for, and most importantly, learn to accept the love and care offered to them in the relationship.5) The secondary characters are vividly portrayed, complex, and intriguing: I sincerely hope we'll get to see more of Zoe, Shakespeare, and Quex in the next installment in the series. I found Zoe especially fascinating. :)6) Finally, the books: oh, I knew I'd fall head over heels for this story the moment Silas and Dom began talking literature! And then there was Blake, and book!porn (okay, perhaps not for them but it certainly felt that way to me), and - well, I love book lovers, real or fictional. And I LOVE book lovers who are capable of disagreement, yet their passion for the topic and their respect and care for each other enables them to have terrific debates about books (and oh, so much more). That ability for conversation, for connection across the divide, for passion AND mutual respect, is the pearl of hope at the core of the historical and political chasms in the story; and it certainly feels like the kind of hope we could use today. In short: do yourself a favor and read "The Ruin of Gabriel Ashleigh" and "A Fashionable Indulgence" (because they are GREAT in their own ways), then read "A Seditious Affair" because it is a fantastic novel, a brilliant take on history, and a gorgeous, passionate love story that might just make you look at the world a bit differently. As for me, I'll be re-reading it first chance I get, and probably many more times in the future.

Not only is this an excellent m/m romance, it's also one of the best historical romances I've read. And, a history lesson in the hell-hole of living in Industrial revolution times. I was amazed to learn that these books are based around an actual event, particularly this book. What a treat this was! Two men have an on-going engagement every Wednesday. They have no knowledge of each other, other than that garnered from dress, speech knowledge and interests. Dom has a peculiar need to be dominated, roughed up... and Silas, from the gutter dregs of London, takes to the role of roughing him up rather naturally. A light form of BDSM, so to speak. These men are from different walks of life, have different opinions of life, however over the course of a year, their sexual appetites are superseded by true friendship, passionate conversations (arguments), and a love for the intellectual...Books. Poetry.Complications arise when these two lovers learn who each other actually are. (We have the advantage of knowing who they are from book 1) Dom is an agent of Homeland Security, pursuing the seditionists plotting against the Tori Government. Silas is a seditionist. A radical, fighting for the rights of the poor and hard done by, by way of writing sedition pamphlets to the poor population, rallying for change.By about 50% (of which I was in that point of no return, desperation to finish this book stage), I was in agony for these two, how could their love rise above their opposing sides?I pretty much devoured the second half of this book in this last afternoon. It consumed me. I was consumed by their plight. The dangers of these times. The illegality if caught having sexual relations. The illegality of being caught as a seditionist. Being pursued by government agents. If Silas was caught, the ruination of everybody in his and Dom's immediate circle. So this is where I stop, in order not to spoiler how it ends. Read these books!! They are a history buff's dream, a romance delight, very very sexy, and... poetry for the mind. Extremely suspenseful. Perfect chemistry, intimacy, and characterisation that holds true to the very end.I switched back and forth from reading and listening on audible. Brilliant narration, the narrator brought this story to life with his interpretation of these richly written characters.
