I came about reading "Niccolo's Smile" when assigned to read "The Prince" and a desire to know more about the author and his motivation, I am so very delighted that I did.In the past, whenever I came across the word "Machiavellian", there was always a negative connotation tied to it. Now I know better.Not many books in this genre have moved me as this one has and I am so grateful that I discovered it. The smile is no longer so enigmatic, but more importantly, the realization that this wonderful man was so horribly misunderstood and under-appreciated and the sadness that he must have felt throughout his life was very moving. It was also a great review of the happenings of that critical time in Italian history in which he played such an important role for such little recognition. A wonderful gift from the author.

This is a concise and lively account of Machiavelli's life. It provides the general reader with much needed context and background in order to read Machiavelli's works with any kind of understanding. While there are good scholarly works that can provide the feeling of more intellectual heft, this book should not be underestimated simply because it is easy to read and doesn't require weeks to read.Machiavelli is one of those brand-name characters that evoke certain reactions in people in such a generalized way that people mistakenly believe they know something about the man and his work. This book can help debunk much of that received nonsense. It is surprising how "modern" a man he was considering he lived nearly 500 years ago.The author has admiration for Machiavelli's skills as an analyst and as a diplomat, has sympathy for his personal suffering and disappointments, and forgiving in his attitude towards Machiavelli's human failings (the author might not even agree they were failings - they were just human). And that is the book's greatest contribution; it shows its subject as a human being rather than a caricature or a statue.In any case, I found this to be a very valuable and entertaining book. I recommend it highly. You can draw your own conclusions about the subject and they author's conclusions. But you will have gained a lot in the process of coming to those (now better informed) conclusions.There are a few helpful maps throughout the book and a suggested reading list at the end. The translation is terrific.

No complaint, first class service!

I love K&N filters and have trusted many expensive and some highly modified cars to them. These work great on my slightly modified 02 Camaro. Many see Machiavelli as a cold hearted bastard that taught people to be liars and dictators. This puts his life and works in a new perspective. Who would have known that Machiavelli was the life of the party at one point? If you want to get to know one of the greatest minds this world has ever seen a little better you need to read this book.

The "story" is well worth the reading, for the entertainment value if nothing else. The picture painted of Machiavelli by our collective conscious was that of rather sociopathic advice, probably given by a sociopath. The picture painted by this author suggests that Nicolo was something of a male chauvinist. My perception has been constructively widened. Allen of Kerrville TX

We are in the process of getting ready to sell our home and this book has helped us to think differently about how to organize for now--and later. I started with bathroom drawers (great tips for this problem zone and others) and we are moving through the house as we figure out our next move. Who knows, we may get so organized we will decide to stay! Next on our list: The storage unit.I also really liked the Interviews with unexpected experts, including kindergarten teachers.

This is hands down the best organizing book I have purchased. It is full of new ideas and unique resources. In particular, the ideas from boat builders, kindergarten teachers, chefs and hoteliers are very interesting and present a new approach to some of the same old issues. Each section is full of beautiful pictures accompanied by thoughtful and concise text. The book is as crystal clear and "organized" as its subject matter. One favorite section is the Remodelista Storage 75! Bravo to Julie Carlson and Margot Guralnick for this excellent zen-like guide to simplifying and organizing one's home.

I work full time, but the time I spend at home has more value.A must-have as both a read-through and a reference.Btw, I bought both the hardcover and the electronic. Being able to go directly to websites from the kindle version is a huge time saver.

I love this book. I was remodeling my kitchen (on a DIY budget) and heard an interview with the author on the Bon Appetit Foodcast, (which is also awesome!), and I was trying to figure out a way to make my new-ish kitchen beautiful and purposeful, form and function, with everything in its place. This book gave me exactly that. Tons of tips and tricks, plenty of suggestions for products to buy - but, on the other hand, it's not just an advertisement in book form. If you're looking for a way to reduce clutter in your home and put everything in its place, check out this book! It's also beautifully shot.

Great book. Filled with practical ideas which I have implemented in my home. The results have been immediate and hopefully lasting. And some of the suggestions are so easy - thank you to the authors for pointing out what should be obvious, but isn't.

I was very happy when this book was finally released! Inside you find new rules for your character's birthday and how this will impact their stats. This is a direct rollover from 1e, so now every rule from 1e has been transported to the second edition!You'll also find new curses and gifts that divine beings can and will give to those they see fit. In one of my games, I had a Dark Elf bestow a curse on a character who was showing a lot of hubris. This led to several adventures where the party tried to remove the curse from this character. It was a lot of fun. I guarantee you'll use this book a great deal and for such a great price, how could you go wrong?Finally, if you are reading this, I ask that you please think for yourself with regards to this game. There is a very vocal group of people who have never played the game and spew hatred regarding this game and Varg. As someone who has played the game for quite a while, I ask that you please think for yourself and judge the game based on it's merits, not what someone has said about it or Varg.

This is a really nice little supplement book. You don't "HAVE" to get these supplements.... But, let's be real. These only enrich your MYFAROG experience, and they are so cheap that you could buy ten of them for a single module or book from another popular system. Well worth your time! I've been roleplaying since the 1980s and AD&A 1st edition. I have experienced a number of rules and systems, but MYAROG is quickly becoming a favorite.

This booklet should have been combined with the Spells & Favors Booklet, combined they would have been less than 75 pages total. I would have given this 2.5 stars as a result.

As someone who loves historical fiction, especially the Phillipa Gregory series about Plantagenet and Tudor England, I was intrigued by how A Queen’s Spy has a new angle on the events after Henry VIII died. When people begin to realize that Edward, Henry’s young son, is on his deathbed, plots and schemes are not only in the halls of power but also in the trenches among those who made a living with their swords. The book tells of two brothers making their living as mercenaries in the service of whoever was willing to pay. As the battle for power between Mary and Elizabeth rages, the pressure increases for mercenaries trying to pick the right side. Drama in the story is heightened by the hatred among brothers and the bitterness that comes from one brother inheriting everything, while others have nothing but their wits and their fighting prowess. The lies and secrets about their father’s bastard adds mystery to the story. Samantha Burnell tells a good story and creates fascinating characters and settings with impressive historical detail. Her writing is truly special, with memorable lines like: “Fate is the excuse of the uninventive, the unimaginative, and the ignorant. I had no idea you are all three!”

From the very beginning, Sam Burnell’s historical adventure novel “A Queens Spy: The Fitzwarren Trials” grabs your attention and doesn’t let go. I liked how the novel started with an exciting life or death scene that sets up the story to come with an interesting relationship between Richard Fitzwarren and his bastard brother Jack, who Richard doesn’t even know he is related to yet. I found it interesting that the story starts out being told from the perspective of Jack rather than Richard, but it really works because it gives you a unique perspective on Richard right from the start, one that you might not get if Richard himself had been the one telling the story.I must say that I am not overly familiar with the history of the Tudors, although I do know their lineage was fraught with drama, betrayal, and passion, or at least that is the impression you get from media representations of them and bits of history. The novel definitely does not disappoint when it comes to all those juicy details. A really good read.

A tale of scandal and intrigue in Renaissance England, where several players—mostly family—vie for ascension. The author certainly knows enough about this time period to render an accurate portrayal. Verisimilitude, or, essentially, believability, in writing is what keeps me invested in any novel. Although fiction, I have to know that it could’ve been real, or that it might’ve happened. With that being said, this 16th century setting is palpable and convincing. This was historical without being tedious, with enough plot twists and adventure to hold my attention. Thumbs up!

The basic historical background was suitably correct .The fictional characters were all disagreeable to a point that it was quite pleasing when they suffered or were killed off !The rather choppy style of the narrative would have been less irritating if double spaces had been left between segments.

This is historical fiction, set in the times of the death of Edward VI and the turbulence leading to the succession of Mary I, and the dangers facing Elizabeth 1. The story mainly focuses on Jack, a bastard son of Fitzwarren. He has at least three half brothers, Robert, Harry and Richard who are legitimate, and probably some number of others like him. During the rather brutal attempt to get rid of Richard by Harry, Jack saves Richard and the two disappear off to France, only to re-emerge at the end of Edward's reign. Richard has to avoid Harry and Robert, as they want to kill him, and he has to choose sides in the struggle between those favouring Lady Jane Grey and those favouring Mary. Richard, not one to avoid risk, chooses both, and then adds Elizabeth. The problem then is to somehow stay alive.The story is exciting, and it paints an excellent picture of how Burnell believes life was like for the lower ranking upper class, and the common soldier class. (I say that because nobody really knows, but it looks convincing.) The plot structure is more or less set to some extent by known events, but he adds in some convincing extras as Richard, and to some extent Jack and some other soldiers do what they have to do to be convincingly on whoever's side is on top at the moment. There were some editing blemishes that pulled his back from a five star rating. I do not mind a reasonable number of typos, but there were some sentences every now and again that jarred for me. One example:[" . . . how's your head then?" Jamie said grinning after experiencing Jamie's capacity for drink.]When reading this, it was not exactly clear to me what the author was trying to say. The characters are well drawn, except I am not convinced that they were adequate for the difficult tasks they undertook and there were some occasional places where there was, for me, a little confusion as to exactly how whatever happened. Otherwise, an excellent book that appears to lead on to a following one.

I was totally dismayed the bulk of the story was about antagonism between brothers and stepbrothers, etc. This would have been better titled, "Feud between Brothers" Still not sure where the mystery was!!

I would definitely recommend this book to anyone that likes historical fiction. It kept my interest from start to finish with interesting characters and intriguing tale.

I had a wonderful trip diving into this bit of historical fiction. It was well written with great attention to details that should seem familiar to people with any knowledge of this time in history. You can't help but be drawn into the characters world and face every step of the drama with them. I can't wait to see what else this author is working on!
