What a privilege and joy it was to have read this book. I made my way through it rather slowly because it was so packed full of historical anecdotes, scientific findings, and thought-provoking insights that I needed a break every chapter or so to let ideas mentally sink in. In 13 chapters, Dr Sagan gives us a glimpse into all scales of space and time. From the Big Bang to the formation of the stars and the Earth, through the painstaking evolutionary process that resulted in human beings, to millenia beyond our time where interstellar travel may be a viable means of commute. From quarks to complex molecules to planets, supernovae and black holes, to the idea of an infinite hierarchy of universes, all nested within one another. This book is far beyond an ordinary astronomy general interest read. Its contents incorporate genetics, ancient history, chemical biology, sociology, religion, human psychology and philosophy... Dr Sagan weaves these realms together in the context of the Cosmos, and raises intriguing questions about hypothetical alternate turn of events as well as where we (humankind) go from here. He pays homage to the brilliant minds whose work and courage has contributed to our current technical capabilities. From Erastosthenes' astute calculation of the Earth's circumference, to Kepler’s observations, to Einstein's special theory of relativity (and those in between: Huygens, Brahe, Newton, Champollion etc.), Sagan not only highlights their contribution, but discusses the societal circumstances that these individuals found themselves in. In doing so, he invokes a scrutiny of our current societal climate and behaviors. Are we doing our best to build and maintain a society that values the pursuit of knowledge over one that may eventually crumble under self-destructive greed? Are we investing an adequate amount of resources (both monetary and intellect) on constructive, self-preserving causes? Sagan goes as far as to compare government spendings on military weapons with scientific research funding, and demonstrates how far will have still to go before our loyalties are united not just within nation-states, but as a species of Planet Earth.Dr Sagan’s intrigues are not limited to Western ways of thinking. Instead, he pays deep respect to the cultures, achievements, and creation myths around the world - this was done through anecdotes from ancient Chinese, Egyptian, and Indian history as well as various tribal accounts. By doing so, he demonstrates that human intrigue has more in common than we may first assume. The early civilizations around the Earth, long before they knew of one another, independently devised theories about how we came to be based on their observations of the heavens. These were passed on to their descendants through subsequent generations ultimately resulting in what we may believe or know of today.I wonder what Dr Sagan would have thought about the state of the world today… recent election results, SpaceX, virtual reality, artificial intelligence/machine learning, Kepler missions, CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing, instability in the Middle East, the Higgs Boson… My guess is that he would simultaneously be alarmed that we are STILL arguing whether or not climate change is a problem, and amazed at our technological achievements with the internet and a legitimate goal to visit Mars. I would without a doubt recommend this book to everyone. A scientific degree is not necessary to fully appreciate the lesson and message that this book conveys. Dr Sagan’s literary style is not only comprehensible but so finely depicts his deep passion for the sciences that it is almost poetic. After having read the book, one could truly dwell on what we can do to unify ourselves as citizens of Planet Earth, with a mutual interest of survival, pursuit of interplanetary/interstellar travel and constant discovery of what our universe has to offer.

I really cannot comment on the menus because I tried it out on VLC (computer/no menus), and don't have a Blu-Ray player at the moment. However, I can say it is a noticeable improvement over the DVD version I have in my collection, but still very much standard definition. They cleaned up the video nicely and upscaled it to 1080i. As noted on Wikipedia, parts were shot of film and video tape to render the special effects of the time. I can't say this is a drastic improvement over the DVD, and I'd have a hard time recommending it to someone that already owns the DVD. This video lacks the fine details that can be made out on newer 1080p releases, and is a victim of its source material. However, if this isn't already in your collection, or if you must have a slightly better looking copy, it's worth a look.As the other reviewer mentioned, there are no subtitles, but unfortunately each episode also starts later than the DVD series thanks to a brief Cosmos studios introduction. Owning both copies, I would've just muxed the subtitles in from the DVD, before adding this to my Plex server. It's a shame, because the DVD title covered several different languages, and not everyone has perfect hearing or speaks English. That makes it impractical to download an SRT file (since those come from the DVD) to watch the subtitles, assuming one is hearing impaired, non-English speaking, or just want to keep the volume low (neighbors, house guest, angry wife etc.). Sound seemed on-par with the DVD, but I'm listening to 5.1 sound down-mixed to computer speaker's stereo. For anyone that's brand new to the Cosmos, this is the old and dated version (1980), not the new one. It's still well worth watching. Things Carl Sagan discusses are still relevant today. I always thought it was unfortunate that this was taken off Netflix prior to the release of Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey. In conclusion, I look forward to a day where I can binge watch this upscaled 1080i picture, and have currently added it to my Plex library. Others that look fondly upon the series, may want to add this copy to their collections, but remember it's still only as good as source it was recorded with. The best parts are the narration and story it tells. It's about optimism and hope, the perils we face, our past, our present and our future.UPDATE: For owners of both the DVD and Blu-Ray, or anyone downloading subtitles from a DVD source, I found a 5 sec. or 5000 ms. offset on the subtitles to work pretty well. I wish they were included, but the DVD version is pretty good and includes subtitles in multiple languages. I'd recommend that over this copy for my non-English and hard of hearing viewers that don't want to go through the technical hurdle of transcoding video/muxing subtitles in.

Review

"Dissent on the Margins offers an excellent contribution to religious studies and serves as a welcome new resource for those interested in the history of lived religion in the Soviet Union."--Kathleen Hiatt, Journal of Chruch and State"Dissent on the Margins is an amazing piece of research and analysis: sophisticated in its conceptualization, exhaustive in its research (in hitherto-secret state, party, and even police archives), this study shows how a small religious group survived decades of Soviet repression, won legalization in 1991, and has since expanded its flock to several hundred thousand adherents. A must-read for historians, political scientists, and sociologists of religion." --Gregory L. Freeze, Victor and Gwendolyn Beinfield Professor of History, Brandeis University"This thoughtful and skillfully researched monograph tells the history of the Jehovah's Witness in the Soviet Union and three of its successor states. It recounts the troubled relationship between state and 'sect,' arguing that the survival of Witness communities shows the limits of state power even in a repressive country like the USSR. The historical sections draw on an impressive, and carefully referenced, body of archival material but Baran also takes her story forward into the first decade of the twenty-first century. It will appeal not only to students of Soviet history but also to all those following the religious situation in the post-Soviet space today." --Miriam Dobson, author of Khrushchev's Cold Summer: Gulag Returnees, Crime, and the Fate of Reform after Stalin"This is the first comprehensive treatment in English of Jehovah's Witnesses in the Soviet Union."-- Hiroaki Kuromiya, Nova Religio"Baran has produced an excellent work that analyzes the Soviet Union from the perspective of a marginal group while making it relevant to the Soviet story as a whole."--Andrew Drozd, Slavic and East European Journal "...[T]his book offers an unusually well-informed, longue durée account of Soviet and post-Soviet religious history. Moreover, it rewards readers with insights from a fascinating array of voices." --Journal of Modern History "Baran s book can be considered extremely successful. She has given us an entirely new and comprehensive account of how this organization was created and how it functioned in the USSR from the beginning of the 1920s to the 1950s."--Slavic Review

makes a person think! this is happening again

I have purchased a few books about Jehovah's Witnesses but I haven't finished reading this book yet...but I know it will meet my expectations.....I love reading about what my spiritual family have endured...Two of the persons killed in Vegas last month were Jehovah Witnesses!

Well written and easy to read.

It has been said that where there is no temple in the forum, the state tends to assume the role of God. In terms of dictating what is and is not acceptable behaviour the atheist Soviet state ruled supreme following Stalin's revolution in 1918 until the late 1980s. During most of this time, despite some periods of relative calm, there could be little toleration for subjects who were not prepared to support Communist ideals. One group who inevitably found themselves at loggerheads with the ruling elite were Jehovah's Witnesses who, as Baran's title suggests, lived both geographically and socially on the margins of Soviet society. While some may consider the discussion of the resistance of a small religious community under a Communist regime as simply an interesting study in history, more informed readers will find the subject most timely, especially in view of recent legislative changes which appear to threaten religious freedom in a way some thought would never be seen again in Russia following glasnost and perestroika. Indeed, outside the former Soviet Union itself, so little has been written about JWs in this region that this book may be considered not so much a welcome addition, but - with the exception of some fine articles by Zoe Knox - more a necessary introduction to the subject.Baran is to be congratulated for compiling such a comprehensive record of resistance from multiple sources, especially for her personal interviews. Although not a Witness herself, I would suggest she knows what makes them tick. The fact that she is fluent in Russian and can read the Ukrainian and Romanian languages helps enormously. More than this, she recites these accounts in an evocative manner that engages the mind of the reader. No easy task. The history lesson starts in World War II, when the Soviet Union annexed territories along its western borders only to find small, but close-knit Witness communities which doggedly refused to modify their beliefs and practices to suit the demands of the Soviet authorities. However, Baran shows the Witnesses were by no means passive victims of the Soviet state but, as their name suggests, outspoken Witnesses promoting a Godly Kingdom which promised to crush and bring an end to man-made governments, Communism included. Consequently she recounts intriguing stories of individuals gatecrashing and undermining lectures on atheism simply by asking basic questions (What is the law of nature? Can there be a law without a lawgiver? What came first, wisdom or matter?), bus drivers preaching to their passengers, children failing to follow nationalistic ceremonies in schools, secret bunkers stashed full of typewriters printing illegal Watchtowers and even Witnesses preaching to officers who arrive at their home to arrest them. Even so, it would be a mistake to think Baran's work is a hagiography. Baran also records instances of families split apart when a child abandons the faith, individuals who lie to avoid arrest and elders who compromise under severe interrogation.Blundering authorities endeavouring to curtail Witness activity have a habit of scoring political own goals. Two instances Baran relates in some detail, were termed Operations North and South and involved the unannounced state sponsored overnight mass deportation of thousands of Soviet Witnesses, including children and the elderly, who were put on cattle cars, and railroaded into forced exile on nights in July 1949 and April 1951 en route to Siberian work camps. Short term the action appeared to provide a wholesale elimination of Witnesses considered a threat to Soviet society. Long term however, as Baran states, "the Soviet Union had made a monumental error" in enabling the Witnesses to make new converts in previously unreached areas or, as the Watchtower wryly commented, "The government has paid their fare to new territories to preach the Kingdom message." In 1965, the state removed the terms of exile, but continued to threaten Witnesses, who suffered job discrimination, police harassment, media prejudice and the public scorn of their neighbours. One subject of particular interest involved the path to legalisation. Earlier attempts by the Soviet state to eliminate the Witnesses had failed as they continued to smuggle Watchtower literature into the USSR, to meet and preach covertly. Indeed, it was said that even a Witness in a punishment cell in the strictest of camps could still manage to receive the latest Watchtower issue from Brooklyn. As a result, by the time of the Breshnev era the state took a more strategic approach. With the intention of controlling religious opponents, the authorities hoped to register the Witnesses so as to monitor their activities more closely. However, the Witnesses insisted that there should "no strings attached" so that they would be allowed to practice their faith as they did in Western democratic countries, a step too far for the state. As a result, the Witnesses concluded it would be better to remain unregistered. It took until the late 1980s for advances in registration to take place. As Baran notes, "in the end, the Witnesses version of legalisation won out, as the Gorbachev-era state agreed to register the Witnesses on the terms of the Governing Body."In her introduction, Baran acknowledges regarding Witnesses that "While I know their perspective on events as devout believers may differ from mine as a historian, I hope that they can find value in this account of their remarkable history." She is right on both counts: Witnesses will disagree on occasion with her interpretation of some events, but they will also be impressed and find much value in her enthralling work. So where would a Witness perspective differ than Baran's? I will concentrate on this while holding considerable admiration for her work. One area involves context. Baran understandably sees the experience of Witnesses beside their Second World War experience elsewhere, when they even faced state opposition in several democratic countries. I prefer to see their experience in a wider context of the last century during which the Bible Students/Witnesses have existed peacefully alongside hundreds of governments in multiple countries. In the rare cases where conflict between the two groups has occurred this has usually, though not always, been either under totalitarian regimes or democratic governments facing extreme circumstances (i.e. war).Another involves definition. As had been the case in Nazi Germany, the Witnesses in Russia saw their resistance as spiritually necessitated by an extreme government which made unreasonable demands which they could not keep without compromising their belief in and responsibilities toward their God, Jehovah. Commentators have tended to see Hitler's suppression of Witnesses as a sign of State insecurity and paranoia. However Baran sees things differently in respect the Soviet Union by contending that the Witnesses "did represent a real threat by their refusal to participate in Soviet society and obey secular authority." She considers that while the Witness stand was religiously motivated, it had political implications, and since its underground organisation showed similarity with those of political dissidents, it is understandable that the regime considered them political enemies. In determining whether an action is religious or political, I would argue that the motivation and intention of the believer is a more reliable gauge than the designation of the ruling authority and that it is inevitable that similarities exist between any organisations, religious or political, when they are driven underground by the imperative of survival. Quite simply, I question the ability of such an extreme regime to make a sound judgement in these circumstances. Given the anti-religious stance of the Communist state it is inevitable that the authorities saw the Witness stand as political rather than religious. In their religiously myopic eyes, for them to have seen it as anything else would, of course, have been to indirectly honour something it considered to be an exercise in unreality. Indeed, as Baran notes, "the characterisation of the Witnesses as a political organization and not a religion acted as a further justification for its continued illegality." It is so much easier to justify suppressing an opponent one sees as 'political' whereas doing so to a religious minority has implications relating to human rights and smacks of overreaction.Baran brings her study very much up to date by considering the rapid growth of Witnesses in Russia, Moldova and the Ukraine since 1991 and the corresponding backlash of anti-cult group propaganda which has permeated the news media to the extent that the term 'totalitarian sect' has now been used to label Witnesses. Despite their international status, Jehovah's Witnesses are still perceived to be very much an American religion in Russia and the Transnistrian Moldovan Republic and resented accordingly. Recent legislative changes appear to threaten their activities with the likelihood that they will once more be driven underground. Even so, Baran notes that "ultimately, the legal fate of Soviet Witnesses and the international Society make it clear that Witnesses will continue to exist, to preach, and to meet together as a faith community, regardless of the circumstances."What lesson might be learned by Baran's excellent study? How should a government deal with citizens who have no interest in supporting its political philosophy but provide, as I see it, only an idealogical challenge? When governments treat them aggressively, as Baran notes, this merely fulfils the Witnesses expectations and reaffirms the Witnesses faith that they are indeed Christ's followers. Despite knowing this fact, opposing governments have repeatedly taken harsh measures and, in so doing, encouraged adherents to reach this conclusion. As a result, Witnesses have been viewed as 'the canary in the coal mine' in terms of human rights issues, in that they provide an early warning system for other endangered minorities whose suppression will likely follow. Since even the most extreme forms of governments have not yet been able to rid themselves of the Witnesses, might a more successful approach therefore be to tolerate these views and direct attentions away from repressive measures toward constructing the society that their manifestos initially promise? Just a thought!Extending this reasoning further, I now reach a theoretical conclusion that is certainly not anything Baran herself proposes. It is the Witnesses belief that without God "man cannot direct his own step" successfully to bring about the utopian society that political parties promise. If, somehow, something remotely like utopia could be satisfactorily achieved by them it may be argued that this argument would be disproved and that, as a consequence, there would no longer be any Jehovah's Witnesses. Meanwhile, until governments manage to deliver on their manifesto promises and provide lasting stable societies that don't threaten minority groups and truly satisfy the long term aspirations their citizens desire, I would suggest that the Witnesses, who do not support anti-government protest marches or militant activism, are actually useful to society in respectfully reminding governments of their human frailties, how far they have fallen short of their lofty ideals and the need to pull their socks up. In this they bring to mind both a scriptural citation (1 Corinthians 1:27-29) and a character from King Lear. The Royal Shakespeare Company writes:"As Shakespeare conceives it, the Fool is a servant and subject to punishment ('Take heed, sirrah – the whip ' 1:4:104) and yet Lear's relationship with his fool is one of friendship and dependency. The Fool acts as a commentator on events and is one of the characters ... who is fearless in speaking the truth. The Fool ... ridicules Lear's actions and situation in such a way that audiences understand the point ... His 'mental eye' is the most acute in the beginning of the play: he ... has the foresight to see that Lear's decision will prove disastrous."

Geography Coloring Book (3rd Edition), by Wynn Kapit

From the Author

AUTHOR'S NOTE: Previous problems with paper quality have been corrected for this new (3rd) edition. For this book I have hand-drawn and lettered all the maps and names of countries, etc., using the same highly effective coloring format that I created for the highly innovative Anatomy Coloring Book which has sold well over three million copies in this country alone. New features in this edition include the use of extremely bold headings to facilitate content recognition and introductory pages previewing each section. Accompanying the maps of of states, countries, continents, regions, empires, flags, mountain ranges, rivers, etc. are brief, but informative and often fascinating descriptions enhancing the "learn while you color" process. You can color eight early empires (including the two Islamic) superimposed over modern maps, clearly showing which countries continue to be bear their historic influences. Color thematic maps of the world; each dealing with weather, vegetation, ocean currents, prevailing winds, populations, racial distribution, religions and languages. Similarities among the flags of the world can be observed by coloring them grouped according to the geographic proximity of their countries of origin. An extensive geographical dictionary, defining and identifying the location of each entry, is provided which also can serve as a dual-function quiz.

From the Back Cover

Wynn Kapit, the designer of the extremely popular Anatomy Coloring Book, has adapted that same coloring format to the subject of geography. This method of learning has proven to be unsurpassed in developing awareness, achieving retention, and experiencing enjoyment. This edition contains: Political maps describing the United States and all the nations of the world according to their regional grouping within a, particular continent. Pertinent data about each state or country, plus fascinating facts of historic, geographic, political, or economic nature. These facts are often related to today's headlines. Physical maps of each continent, illustrating the major rivers, mountain ranges, mountain peaks, and specific land regions. Visual comparisons of size among the countries themselves, as well as to the various states of the United States. Maps, covering larger areas, provide the reader with a bigger picture regarding the location of the country or region under consideration. Maps describing the, transformation of the former Soviet Union into fifteen separate nations, and the former Yugoslavia into five new nations. Thematic maps of the world describing weather, vegetation, ocean currents, prevailing winds, population, racial distribution, religions, and languages. Flags of the world are shown organized according to the geographic locations of their countries of origin. Past and future movement of continents over millions of years, plus the location of earthquake and volcano zones. Eight historic land empires (see below) superimposed on modern maps with extensive descriptions tracing the rise and fall of each empire. An index that serves as a dictionary, identifying and locating each entry. This feature can also be turned into a fascinating, dual-function quiz.

Some great and detailed maps however much of the detail is far too busy. Most importantly, WHY ARE THE MAPS ON THE LEFT PAGES?!?!! All of the historical information is on the right page, the one that lays flat against the table but the page that you color is on the left, where you have to press and push and struggle to flatten the page so you can color. Ugh. This cannot have been a conscious choice. A lot of potential here. Poor execution.

I recently bought the Geography Coloring Book and really love it except for the fact that it was published in 2002 and now some important details have changed. For example the capitals of Tanzania, Nigeria and Mozambique have changed names/locations, the Balkan countries are incorrect with Yugoslavia gone and Serbia, Kosovo and Montenegro becoming independent countries and South Sedan that has seceded from Sudan. I am hoping that this book will be updated soon and I can purchase a new copy..

I've completed both the anatomy and the physiology coloring books in college for my BSN. I aced both courses, all levels and honestly because these coloring books are great study aids.I like to color to relax and I'd rather do coloring books in which I learn like with my science coloring books in college.I wasn't really good at geography so I was excited that there was a coloring book by the same author who did the anatomy and physiology coloring books I so enjoyed. I still keep and refer to them. They also helped me ace my other related science courses. I still see the colors and the visual when I think about whatever topic. I still use them as a reference point. This is a superb book and, as I expected, well organized. It's more than geography and covers populations, land use, rain fail, climate and all things related.,One down would be that I had a hard time grasping the overall coloring instructions at first. The examples are on the front page and it refers to that. It could be a better example and/or a better explanation. Or maybe I'm slow. I soon figured it out though. The only other down would be that it's a little old (2003). I would totally buy an updated one or ANY other coloring book by wynn kapit!!!As for now, I'm thinking I'll buy new anatomy and physiology books and recolor them!

Good information. Black print on newspaper style paper. Felt pens bleed through and color pencils stretch the paper and do not lay down enough color. Would benefit greatly if the paper was the whiter heavier warm press style that did not bleed through and then printing on both sides of the paper would be cleaner. It is sold as a "coloring book" and would benefit from a revamp, even if the cost increases, to keep this designation. Otherwise this is not a great coloring book as far as the paper pages go....

I like the idea of this book a lot but they should have designed the pages with more of a margin so you could at least cut off the binding and lay the pages flat. It is really annoying that they didn't design the pages to lay flat or at least allow enough binding margin to spiral bind it ourselves.

Learning Geography by coloring is a novel idea. I got this book to review what I learned in Junior High. (I am 63 now). It has sparked my interest in Geography and has made me a geographer! It has inspired me to write short papers on geographical topics, like what are the facts about Timbuktu, what is Oceania, and what are the runes? Get this book. The coloring is fun--at whatever age--and Geography is exciting. We have an amazing world.

This is an excellent supplement to our middle school - high school geography studies. They think they are getting away with something by “just coloring,” but they are really learning so much relative, political and physical geography in the process. I have learned very much too. Even for the one child who despises coloring, this turns out to be just the right amount, as most of the countries only require coloring the outline and marking major cities and places.

This book is fabulous and finally challenging my child! The coloring is great but there's so much extra information in the book. I can actually see reusing it again in a year or two as a refresher. We had gone over map skills so many times but this is such a different approach. The pages copy fairly well. She is elementary age and so I do end up assisting her more than other books, but she was flying through even middle school level books before. This is definitely slowing her down and challenging her, but even as an adult I am learning new things. I might start having to copy some pages for me too!I did NOT receive this product at discount.

This book prepared me for the exam. It has been a very long time since I have explored the university-level math that was on this exam. It was still a very difficult, timed exam but the practice tests as well as the informative info was perfect. I did end up passing and I would not have, had it not been for the prep from this book.

The product served as a great study tool for the OAR and review of skills that I had learned earlier in my education, however, I believe that review material and questions could be specified to fit the problems that are present on the actual OAR exam and in everyday military life. For instance, Mathematics, Reading Comprehension, and Mechanical Comprehension examples and questions that an officer in the military would see in everyday duty would provide better study aid for the exam. Overall a great study tool.

Reading and mechanic portion is good but math portion lacks a lot, extremely different from the actual test

This study guide sucked. Absolutely terrible. Only the mechanical comprehension has any bearing on the actual test which is the only reason I gave this 2 stars. The math in here is a bloody joke. In reality you need to restudy all of your college level math instead of this guides 6 -10 grade bs. The reading comprehension section of this study guide has litterally no bearing on what is on the actual test. The practice test in here is pathetic. I would have scored a 74 if it was used instead of the real one, but alas I live in the real world, not the land of Narnia this pos came from. This thing is chocked full of errors, spelling mistakes, and overall bad information. Save your money and try the other guide, or do what I am going to do and use actual text books. I did pass the test btw, but literally no thanks to this guide (save for some of the mechanical aspects). Seriously, this this will not help you.

Good book to study with, I have nothing against it. But don't just use it alone, find other resources online.

The math and curriculum is incredibly untrustworthy. It’ll try to help you, yes, but as an individual you have to do your own independent thinking to know that the book is wrong. I suggest buyin a different book.

The review provided some fresh set of questions for the 3 parts of the OAR and it is recent. However, the scoring of the test continues to be a mystery???

Still working on it.
