Review

"Preparing the table for Thanksgiving dinner, Mrs. Moose confesses to Mr. Moose that everything would be quite perfect if only they had a turkey for dinner. . . . With a plot twist that only young children will find surprising, Mrs. Moose offers the turkey a chair and treats him as an honored guest." Booklist, ALA"Together Bunting's good-natured tale and de Groat's autumn-hued richly detailed watercolors convey the animals' warm friendship and humor. . . . This ideal family read-aloud will awaken the holiday spirit in all." Publishers Weekly"Humorous double-page spreads in cheerful watercolors show the plump, personable animals in an ice-crusted autumn woodland and a snug country cottage that suits the Mooses and the Goats, who are garbed like Eastern European peasants." My day job, as a teacher requires me to read many books to my students. This book has been a favorite of mine for years. Because of the comedy in the story, older (4-6th) grade student can enjoy it as well as primary students. I like to use this book to teach prediction and have the student make a prediction as to whether or not Mr, Moose and his "hunting party" will catch Turkey or not. Students enjoy writing their prediction before we finish the book. The ending has a cute twist everyone can enjoy. This is a great book to read the day before Fall Break, as it is light hearted and fun.

When selecting books for our children, I try to pick stories that will hold their attention, provide an important message, and involve animals and/or nature. Eve Bunting’s book A Turkey For Thanksgiving has all of these criteria - and more! It is also a good book for children who are vegetarians or vegans. In A Turkey For Thanksgiving Mrs. Moose is preparing a Thanksgiving dinner for her and Mr. Moose’s animal friends. However, this year she has decided that she wants a turkey for dinner so Mr. Moose, joined by his friends, sets off to find one. Eventually a turkey is found by the river and brought back for dinner. The terrified turkey is delighted, and relieved, to learn that he isn’t the main course, but a guest at this vegetarian feast! This delightful book evokes the true spirit of Thanksgiving. –Reviewed by Glenn Perrett

I’m a retired children’s Librarian and this was always my favorite thanksgiving Storytime book-The illustrations are priceless-The kids loved it!

Cute thanksgiving book! My 3 year old loved the pictures!

This book is absolutely charming! Both the words and the illustrations perfectly capture the warmth and gratitude of Thanksgiving, as well as a family atmosphere. I would recommend this book to both the young and old.

Cute story -- perfect to use as the "script" for traditional family "drama" performed by the kids after Thanksgiving dinner.

This is a great story with a nice twist on Thanksgiving Turkey.

love it

Spoiler Alert: The Hero Dies: A Memoir of Love, Loss, and Other Four-Letter Words, by Michael Ausiello

Review

“When a journalist as talented as Ausiello turns their focus inward, something special is bound to occur. Such is the case with Spoiler Alert: The Hero Dies. A more heartbreaking, honest, funny, and insightful book on the subject of loss can be found nowhere.” (J.J. Abrams, writer-director-producer, Lost, Alias, Westworld, Star Trek, Star Wars: The Force Awakens)“Engrossing, poignant, tragic, and hilarious – I couldn't put it down. Read this book. You are welcome.” (Jenny Lawson, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Let’s Pretend This Never Happened and Furiously Happy)“Sexy and sweet, charming and funny, Michael Ausiello somehow manages to turn a story of loss into a hopeful tale that shines with warmth and wit.” (Lauren Graham, star of Gilmore Girls and Parenthood and New York Times bestselling author of Someday, Someday, Maybe and Talking as Fast as I Can)"Like some of Michael's favorite TV shows, his book is heartfelt, smart, funny, insightful, and packs an enormous emotional punch. I can't recommend it more." (Greg Berlanti, writer-director-producer, The Flash, Arrow, Everwood, Dawson's Creek, Brothers & Sisters)"Tender, profoundly poignant, and cleverly written with equal parts wit and integrity, the book is grounded in the realities of modern relationships and the grim fate of mortality. A heartbreaking memoir infused with dark humor and composed with true love." (Kirkus Reviews (starred review))“The ending is given away in the title, but the experience of reading it is something wholly unexpected . . . . a humorous, enlightening, and sometimes even sensual look at gay life in New York City…and a swoon-inducing romance that pulls no punches about how just how much work goes into staying with the love of your life until the end of his life . . . .The beauty of the book, however, is that the details don’t have to mirror a reader’s own life so eerily for the story to feel so personally powerful.” (Kevin Fallon The Daily Beast)"Spoiler Alert: The Hero Dies is a haunting and profoundly sad story, but it's brightened by witty writing, comedic interludes and the two charismatic, endearing and appealing heroes at the book's center." (Shelf Awareness)"What Ausiello has done is made certain that Cowan’s one special life will never be forgotten. The hero died, but the spirit lives." (Lambda Literary Review)"A poignant memoir." (Entertainment Weekly)"As hate threatens to strangle our country, take a look at what love looks like." (Newark Star-Ledger)

Well this book definitely gets the 'clean your tear ducts award'. After devouring this in great meaty chunks I feel like I've just come out of a fever dream. . Halfway through this so funny, but oh so sad memoir I looked up Kit on instagram and found myself so overwhelmingly grief stricken that this person I never knew was no longer among us. That's a testament to Ausiello, and his writing. I marveled at his blunt honesty not just in retelling what it was like to face the loss of the most important person in your life, but also who they were before the cancer struck. Warts and all Michael presents a modern, real, flawed, messy, complicated and most importantly loving relationship that feels instantly identifiable and so that much more of a gut punch as you follow their journey.I was lucky enough to attend a book signing event where Michael shared that one of the things that just broke his heart is Kit saying to him, "Don't forget me". How happy Kit must be to see that not only hasn't Michael forgotten, but has made him eternally alive and vibrant for the millions of people who never had the good fortune to meet him. I loved this book.

Like many memoirs about death and dying, Michael Ausiello's "Spoiler Alert: The Hero Dies", is a combination of personal and societal remembrances. Some of the personal memories in Ausiello's book are raw and gritty, while the societal ones are more general. How to help a loved one through treatment in today's world of cancer medicine. And how to help that loved one to as good a death as possible.Michael Ausiello's book is the story of his life with Christopher ("Kit") Cowan and Kit's death at the age of 42 from a rare form of colorectal cancer. Michael takes the reader through his meeting Kit and their thirteen years together. The two married when Kit was diagnosed with cancer, roughly a year before his death. Their relationship was very much the work-in-progress most of our relationships are, straight or gay, and Michael Ausiello seems to be as honest as he can be of the ups and downs of any marital relationship. But Kit's world was not only his husband Michael. An only child, he was very close to his parents, and he was extremely well-respected in the New York design world.I thought that Ausiello's book was very well written but also a bit too long. An editor might have taken a few pages, a few scenes, a few reminisces out and the story would have been complete. I did like the last part, which looked at a possible future for the two if Kit had lived.

First and foremost Michael Ausiello is an excellent writer and story teller. You will feel like he’s telling you this story sitting on the couch in your living room. That in it of itself makes this a great read. Now the story... If you have ever been in a serious relationship with someone you love, you will relate to this book (I am an diet coke fountain soda fanatic and my wife has the dreaded morning tourette's). Loving someone is freaking hard work and Michael doesn't shy away from the troubles he and his husband Kit faced in their relationship. He is also extremely honest with his own feelings, from the childhood bullying, the loss of his parents all the way through Kit's diagnosis, their marriage, and Kit's death. This book made me hug my wife a little bit more, be patient with my kids a little bit longer, and face the fact that we’re not here that long. Try not to waste a minute of it. (note to my family, if I’m in the hospital in pain and can’t talk, please rub my feet ).

I wish there were more stars. This book is a moving look into a life of filled with love and hardship. It's romantic and heartbreaking, funny and sad. Michael Ausiello's recap of his relationship with his husband is both extraordinary and normal simultaneously. It offers a look into the trials and tribulations of a life spent together from the butterfly-inducing beginning to the tear jerking end. you will hug and kiss your loved ones a little longer and a little tighter after you've finished reading. Never have I missed a person I have never met but I can undeniably say that Kit's absence in this world can be felt. This book with stay with you. Thank you for sharing your life, and Kit, with us.

I bought this book because I was interested in the memoir genre and because I discovered that the author’s story had a lot in common with mine, though I am not gay nor male nor a New Yorker. But it only goes to show that love is, indeed, love. There’s quite a bit of language in here not suitable for polite company - in particular the fairly frequent use of the word c*#t, including in the eulogy, but the attachment between the two heroes of this book comes through loud and clear. And there’s enough humor here to leaven the story. So if you can handle a gay verging on camp vibe, you might enjoy this book.

Bearing the best title of 2017 (sorry "The People We Hate At the Wedding", you've been bumped), Michael Ausiello's story of his 14 year relationship with his partner/husband is a warts and all look at love, life and loss in the 21st century. And the author doesn't spare the warts - there's a lot in here that a more reticent man would have just buried inside (or talked to his therapist about) and never revealed, in order to paint the hero as THE HERO, and not a real human being and a real relationship with its many ups and downs and sideways. Bravo Michael Ausiello!
