Barry A. Rubin, MA in Communications from Ohio University, is rabbi of Emmanuel Messianic Jewish Congregation in Clarksville, Maryland. Founded in 1915, it is the oldest extant Messianic congregation in the world. In 1988, he became director of The Lederer Foundation (now Messianic Jewish Publishers and Resources), a sixty-year-old organization formerly in the Orthodox Jewish section of Baltimore, now in Clarksville/Columbia of Howard County, Maryland. If you are looking for good exegesis you need something like this book. The Bible as a whole including the New Testament is a Hebrew text. Knowledge of the history, culture, language and customs of the Hebrew people is simply not optional. This Bible has everything it needs in that department. The names are written as transliterations of the original Hebrew, a commentary to ellucidate several details, sections that break up the text to give historical/cultural context and many many references to Jewish commentaries throughout history. If you are looking to understand God's Word this book should be in your library.

As an on-again-off-again practicing Christian I have struggled with trying to get a better understanding of Jesus. With a copy of the Bible in Aramaic-English and this translation from Hebrew I continue to learn about the daily routines that he and disciples experienced and the nuances of the languages they spoke. Both books help me in getting a better understanding of Christianity's roots and finding answers to my questions. This book, especially, provides great illustrations, side notes, and information to invigorate my thoughts.

In recent years, several major Study Bible projects surfaced and released with mixed reception. One of the latest additions to this Study Bible market, and one that promises a wealth of useful insight into the Scriptures is the newly published The Complete Jewish Study Bible (CJSB).The CJSB is a unique Study Bible experience that seeks to submerge the reader into the Jewishness of both Testaments through fresh and relevant study notes and articles selected to accomplish this mission. The CJSB is based on the widely used Complete Jewish Bible (CJB) by David A. Stern. Those familiar with the CJB will know what to expect. Stern has translated the Bible with a particular sensitivity to the Jewish tradition and thus has retained Jewish names and words with theological significance. For example, the reader will discover thousands of occurrences in both the Old and New Testament of Adonai where the Hebrew and Greek would not warrant such translation, but the Hebraic tradition would (xlii-xliii). Readers will surely have a personal preference and opinion towards this decision and others like it, and further comment is beyond the scope of this review.The CJSB prepares the reader for “extensive bottom-of-page study notes to help readers understand the deeper meanings behind the Jewish text” (xix). However, for most readers (and especially those familiar with other Study Bibles on the market) this statement will over promise and under deliver. Many pages lack any presence of study notes. The notes are certainly helpful and useful for understanding the deeper meaning of the text, but they are not “extensive” by any meaningful definition of the word. I do not say this to discourage the reader away from the benefit of the CJSB, but rather to prepare them for the content therein. Still, the benefit of the CJSB is found in the numerous, and I mean numerous topical and themed articles. The topical articles cover a wide range of topics in both the Old Testament and the New, including the nature of covenant, millennialism and the future Israel, Satan in Jewish thought, a Jewish understanding of Hell, and much, much more. The themed articles are abundant and sorted under twelve major themes: (1) anti-Jewish scriptural interpretation, (2) covenants, (3) Jewish customs, (4) Jewish-Gentile relations, (5) messianic prophecy, (6) the names of God, (7) Sabbath, (8) salvation and atonement, (9) the holy days of Israel, (10) the land of Israel, (11) Torah, and (12) the tabernacle. The CJSB opens with a lengthy introduction the CJB and closes with a number of appendix material (e.g. glossary of Hebrew words, topical and theme article index, biographies of rabbis and sages, etc.) and eight full-color maps.The CJSB is a unique Study Bible and a valuable investment for anyone interested in better understanding the Jewishness of the Old and New Testament. The articles are useful and many, and the CJB is an excellent supplemental translation to your Bible of choice. However, while I was honestly pleased by content that the CJSB offered, for some reason, I continued to feel as though something was missing. It could be the lack of “extensive” notes that I was anticipating or that they were paired with the CJB—a supplemental translation choice, in my honest opinion. Despite this, I was surprised at how often I was reaching for the CJSB to see what the contributors had to say about a passage or topic and I was pleased by the content and number of articles.The Complete Jewish Study Bible is a welcomed addition to the Study Bible market. The CJSB offers an unparalleled experience that will truly enrich the reader’s understanding of the Scriptures. If anything, I think that it is safe to assume that the CJSB will provide another perspective for the reader to weigh as they seek to resemble and serve Jesus in the twenty-first century. I said it before, and I will say it again, the CJSB is a unique Study Bible and a valuable investment for anyone interested in better understanding the Jewishness of the Old and New Testament. It's really nice to have a Bible that teaches me about the Jewish culture and original Hebrew language! Feels like I'm getting an accurate understanding of what the words really mean. The notes are great and very in depth. For me personally, I feel like the translation itself is a little too modern and paraphrased sometimes. I feel like I'm reading the Message or NLT at times. With that said, I still love it and will use it for study.

Well when I read "error made by ALL major English versions" "and MOST commentators" in regards to a verse. Or "that was for Israel" only.. some times. And when you your self look into this.... its the classic "I am right your wrong". This book is for the WORLD.. God came to save the WORLD! Its not a JEWISH GOD.. when you make Jesus your lord as the word says you have a new spirit. It says.. there is no more Jew no gentile no slave no free. Its ONE body and Christ is the head.I love this bible but now I wonder if some verses are not worded their way of thinking not what is written.

Really enjoy this version. Similar to ESV, but translation directly from Hebrew to English has some subtle differences. Very conversational and clear.

It gives you the Jewish perspective straight from the Bible, without any Christian biest noncence, and strait from the Jewish perspective, without any Christian antisemitism/and no Christian/gentile pollution. Plus it gives you the Jewish translations!

As a Christian, I am always looking for new ways to learn more and more about Israel and the Jewish beliefs. This Bible is an excellent translation for that purpose. I would like to see more study notes, as my learning comes mostly from them. I have only read through Exodus thus far, so I anticipate more and more help in my quest. Also, as an author my self, I am constantly researching information for my Old Testament writings.

As a backyard chicken keeper, urban homesteader, and chicken blogger, I thought this book would make a lovely addition to my coffee table collection, as well as a great conversation starter about various chicken breeds. While the book is filled with some truly lovely pictures of unique fowl, it mainly covers bantam breeds, and a few basics like the Barred Plymouth Rock and Cornish meat varieties. A majority of the book is black and white, often blurry photos of poultry shows, random people holding chickens at said shows, and information about championship breeding programs. While I did enjoy reading some of the dialog, laughing at the truth of chicken photography, and seeing some spectacular new breeds, I was disappointed in the rest of the book's lackluster layout and banter about standards. Perhaps capturing the beauty of chickens through the eyes of poultry show contestants is what the author was aiming for, but I was sincerely hoping for more of an encyclopedia of beautiful chicken pictures, and not the caged show lifestyle in black and white. At present the book remains on my coffee table, but I'll be looking for another to replace it soon.

Cute photo series! I love chickens, I had a variety of different chicken breeds growing up and am strongly considering putting a small chicken coop in my city-little front yard. In the interest of researching what chicken breeds would work in the city (and honestly, having some pretty-chicken eye candy), I ordered this book. There is some educational text by the pictures, and a brief essay in the beginning, that make this more than just a pretty show.However, the best part really is the chicken pics! There are so many crazy colors, feather textures, and comb configurations that you can't stop looking at them! There are chicken breeds in here I'd never heard of, and I was in 4H as a kid - you'd think I'd know it all when it comes to farm animals. Definitely not a dense read, but a very, very fun one!

Oh my yes - this was a beautiful book. I am so intrigued with chickens and the more I see of them, the more I realize how unique and beautiful they are. I have spent countless hours trying to photograph chickens. They are virtually impossible to shoot. They don't hold a pose for very long, and when you get a good shot, it is because you've missed 100.This is a gorgeous representation of these beautiful birds. I look at it often.

I love this book! I have given it as a gift to several people. If you love chickens (or even kinda like chickens), you're gonna love this book! The pictures are great, and the information re: origin & markings is tremendous!

What can I say, I love my chickens and have about 22 different breeds. I love the variety of them and this book illustrates the diversity of this species with wonderful art quality pics. It is definitely a table top book.

I got this book not because I intend to raise chickens or anything but because I was fascinated by the different varieties. The price was reasonable, the pictures were great, and it's a fun book to leave of the coffee table.
