If I could give it 4.5 stars I would. Here's why:As a certified early childhood education teacher who is homeschooling my own preschooler, this book did not profoundly change how I was teaching. It did, however, tweak it enough so that this book is an invaluable resource to me. It reminded me what a good education program in the preschool years looks like. I can absolutely vouch that what the authors teach in this book is quality preschool instruction that teachers are being taught to teach with. It even read like an education textbook back from my college days (a great compliment, as education textbooks are generally clearly laid out, visually appealing, and make excellent reads).Changes in my homeschool instruction that I specifically made were to incorporate more open-ended activities that allow my preschooler to explore materials, rather than formulate a correct response in a close-ended task. I incorporated more sensory materials. I utilized countless ideas from the book for activities and lessons. Overall, I am very happy to own this book, as I know it will be a "desk reference" that I consult regularly. I even LOVE the yummy and easy recipe ideas in the margins of some pages. These homeschooling mamas know what us other mamas need!Do I think it is worth the purchase (even at its high cost)? A definite YES! So why would I rate it 4.5 stars?Well, for one thing, there is a very nifty and free resource available to us all that steals thunder from books like this. It is called Pinterest. Some of the very same activities I saw in the book I would also come across on Pinterest (not all, so still worth the purchase).Also, as if this book isn't expensive enough, prepare to spend much more on putting together activities from this book. While each activity is very affordable, this book is chocked full of great ideas, so lots of money ended up getting shelled out creating a classroom full of their ideas. More of a blessing than a curse. Just heed the warning. My bank account is happy that I have finished reading this book!One other thing (I realize I'm being a little picky here), the book had beautiful, intriguing photos of awesome activities - with no captions. For any of the photos. Like at all. A lot of information can be discerned from captions, so I think an opportunity was missed here. The lack of captions was most aggravating when I came across the perfect DIY tabletop light table, better than any post I've seen on Pinterest. While they have a tutorial on how to make a light table, it is NOT the same as what is featured in several pictures of the book, including the very section on light tables. I even went as far as posting a question on the book's Facebook page about the discrepancy and was given a generic and border-line condescending response of "buy the book; there's a tutorial in there." Nope, there isn't. I own the book, so I know. Nor is there adequate descriptions of the pictures, including the ones in which this specific light table is used. It may not seem like a big deal, but if you are a visual person who like I am, it makes a difference.
I agree with another reviewer that the light table seen in the pictures is not the one described in the back of the book. I as well tried emailing the authors to help with the discrepancy and they did not respond. That was frustrating, and I have yet to finish the light table because my questions remain unanswered. I also agree that captions to the pictures would have been a wonderful addition to the book. I did really enjoy the book however. Great ideas (a lot of which are repeated and things I already knew but I like that I have it all in one place). Well written. I have contemplated shelling out the money for their more expensive curriculum; however, because I know now that they do not respond to emails (even though their contact info is listed on their website), I am not ready to make the move. Overall good read but still frustrated.
We love this book! There are so many ideas for learning & sensory play that I would have never come up with on my own. In my opinion these projects would work well for children who are older than preschool age as well. I really like that the ideas are divided into categories (science, fine motor, math, etc.) I also enjoy the full color photos of the activities described. I'm so thankful for this book, we've been having fun with it.
This book is amazing. It was recommended to me by one of my friends who runs a preschool co-op and the ideas and activities in this book do not disappoint. This book is a great resource for getting set-up to teach your kids at home through play-based learning. My girls (3 and 4 years old) love all the activities. I work full-time and love doing these activities after work and on the weekends.
Fun ideas for preschoolers- elementary. My kids are 4 and 6 and both are enjoying the activities!!If you need ideas of what to do to keep your child learning and having fun, this is the book for you!
