About the Author

Justin Rajewski first got started with FPGAs over a summer internship with Northrop Grumman before his senior year of high school. Before this, a SparkFun blog post had piqued his interested in FPGAs, but he was frustrated with the lack of information available for beginners. After a few summers working with FPGAs as an intern, and some formal classes at Stanford University, Justin created the Mojo, an FPGA development board targeted specifically for beginners. I'd mentioned in another the review the fact that the XiLinx system doesn't support Windows 10 and neither does it's work around of supplying a 9 gigabyte virtual machine so if you're using MOJO this book will tell you how to do it but if you have Windows 10, you can't. :-(

Back in the mid-1970s, everyone and their brother – at least in the circles I ran in – was trying to build and even mass produce small computers. A few really big names emerged like Apple, IBM, TRS (Tandy Radio Shack), Commodore and several more. But there were a lot of smaller companies like Cromemco that produced specialty systems. If you wanted to build a computer or similar device from the ground up, the first thing you needed was a very deep pocket to fund the design and production of various chips. Today, you can literally roll your own chips in the form of FPGAs - field-programmable gate arrays. To a guy who used to scrimp pennies to buy what are now commodity parts that sold for a king’s ransom back then, this is simply mind-blowing. FGPAs are programmable logic devices. You design them with software, using a special board, to perform logic functions and then like Lego or MineCraft sub-assemblies link them together to perform more complex tasks. The beauty of this book is that you need only basic knowledge of electricity, programming and computer science to take a stab at designing and creating FPGAs. It is not something that will appeal to more people, but for those who have a yen for it, this book is great. The language is simple and clear and the author does a lot of hand-holding. I kind of doubt I’ll ever get to the stage of designing an FPGA, but author Justin Rajewski has convinced me to get closer by joining the Arudino camp. This is a very well written book that explains well what is a FPGA and the difference between it and a microprocessor. It isn't for the faint of heart; as the author says, you need to be familiar with concepts of circuits (current and voltage) and programming knowledge is a plus. I'd say if you don't already have basic programming experience, you do need some to get much out of this. You also need to be facile with the computer. Commands like "source /opt/Xilinx/14.7/ISE_DS/settings64.sh" are on page 11 of this book!The book also relies on proprietary hardware (that the author developed via a kickstarter) which would set you back between one a two hundred dollars. The lower end is a board and an accessory that lets you see inputs and outputs. The higher end is for other boards that add functionality, such as a microphone. You can get the basics out of what an FPGA is without the specific hardware, but much of the book relies on having it to try out the examples and they are specific to the hardware.Overall a great book, but maybe the MOJO hardware requirement can be in larger type on the cover.

We wanted to provide an inexpensive training platform to help train people on using Verilog/VHDL and programming and debugging FPGAs. Unfortunately, the author of the book decided to use the MOJO V3 from Embedded Micro as the target platform. For some inexplicable reason, the engineers at Embedded Micro decided to dumb down the experience to a "For Dummies" experience by writing some proprietary interface that uses some in-house designed IDE called "Lucid". If all you want to do is play with an FPGA, then this is an OK book. If you are looking to train in Verilog or VHDL, it's pretty useless. No Engineering company is going to let you use LUCID to design a real product.

FPGAs are integrated circuits that are based around a matrix of configurable logic blocks connected via programmable interconnects. They are configurable in the field after manufacture. What makes them unique against microcontrollers such as Arduino is that you are designing a real digital circuit that can execute complex tasks in parallel. Unlike microcontrollers, FPGAs are programmed with Hardware Description Language, not a programming language such as C and C++. This book will guide and walk you through the learning curve from setting up your environment to doing some real-world projects.This book provides an easy and fun way to learn FPGAs. It is well written and easy to follow. It is a great starter for beginners but it assumes some basic electronics knowledge though. You'll learn about the basics of FPGAs, how to set up the environment so that you can do hands-on and develop your skills by working through example projects. The programming tools required are Lucid and Mojo IDE. Don't worry if you don't know much about these tools. The book will guide you through them from the installation to using them well.I really enjoy this book. It helps me get to speed with FPGAs and then some more. If you're a beginners or hobbyists who are interested in FPGAs and wanting to use them in your design solutions, this book is for you. It makes learning FPGAs simple, effective and fun.

Don't buy this book if you plan on making a living developing FPGAs. The book is well written for beginners, but they are using a weird new language that (having worked with FPGAs since the 1980s) I've never heard of. Stick to Verilog or VHDL if you want to develop FPGAs. My personal preference for begginers is VHDL. It's more typing but its builtin strong type checking will save you later.

This book answered all of the questions I had. I have been mixing for about 5 years now, and I had gotten as far as I could get with the knowledge and trial & error that I have gained. The main part of the book I needed to fine tune was my EQ'ing. It gave me a basic template to go off of, and with simple tweaking to the recommendations in the book, my songs instantly sounded much better, every instrument stands out, and with has more power. The part about compression helps as well, although compressing is such a difficult beast to master properly, I still need more trial and error based off the recommendations in the book.It is very well written, as if an actual person is guiding you along, rather than a bunch of technical jargon which can be confusing. It is very easy to follow and understand. I have not tried the enclosed exercises on the DVD, instead referring to my own projects I am working on while using those as my exercises. Highly recommended for anyone wanting to add a bit more understanding and push to their mixes.

There are a lot of books out there with techniques and theories, and everyone says "there's no right or wrong way, and no hard and fast rules." That is a true statement, but for beginners, a guideline of where to start is still helpful. Owsinski tells you the same, but he also tells you where you might set your knobs to start, and how to determine which way to crank them. It's extremely hands-on and practical. The included DVD gives you some sessions to work with in multiple DAW formats so you really get a feel for how the things he tells you really affect the sounds you hear.It doesn't go too far and only beginner to early-intermediate mixers are going to get the maximum value out of it, but there are probably some tidbits and snippets of wisdom that more advanced engineers may pick up on.

Book is very generalized...not particularly informative.

I will start by saying I have several of Bobby Owsinski's books, and have learned alot from them. I ordered this book from his web site thinking that it would add to my knowledge. However, there was nothing on his web site that indicated you needed pro tools. (Which I do not have), I did call cuetomer service at Lynda and express this to them. They offered me a refund of my money. I ended up giving the book and disc to someone that has pro tools. So, if I were selling this book, and wanted future customers, I would put a program on the disc that would enable me to use all of the samples on the disc and perfom all of the lessons. Also I think that Bobby should put on his web site that you need pro tools to use this tutorial

The second book in Bobby Owsinski's new series "Audio Mixing Boot Camp" from Alfred Music Publishing surpassed all of my expectations. Bobby covers the science of mixing in a fresh and intuitive way. As expected, the book delves into the fundamentals of sliding faders and tuning knobs. Where this text really shines is Bobby Owsinski explains in non-technical language what is happening as you are adjusting your mix.The book covers music listening and analysis as it teaches you how to "visualize" your mix. The book also touches on basic arranging principles. Owsinski not only shows the reader how to identify the "groove" in a song but also how to create a "groove". The author also explains how to use sound "pads" to tie together the mix, and punch up the most important elements in your arrangement.Audio Mixing Boot Camp also talks about coloring your mix and giving it depth. Not only does Bobby Owsinski explain reverbs and delays but also the origins of plate, hall and chamber reverbs. The book also show the reader how to apply reverb to the mix without losing the definition of the individual instruments.I was especially happy to see the section covering choruses, flanges, phases and other modulation effects. Many musicians simply do not have a solid understanding of what their effects are actually doing. The age old mystery on the difference of tremolo and vibrato is finally reveled.The book is well written and a great text for the novice or pro. Once again it is accompanied with a dynamite DVD that is well produced and visually explains all of the concepts in the book. This is a must read for any musician with an interest in home recording or getting ready to start a recording project.

This is a boxed set of romance storied dealing with mail order brides who travel to Bannack, Montana. Each novel has the lady writing to her diary. I like that the words are italicized so we are sure they are for the diary. Each novel deals with a different story of ladies who come from different walks of life, but they all end up in Bannack looking for a different life and for love. I enjoyed these stories and highly recommend them.

I loved reading these mail order bride series. I was always anxious to see how they would end. They had Faith God would lead them to the right partner. The stories were exciting and challenging for the bride's. I would recommend reading these stories to my Christian friends. They are clean , wholesome stories that are fun to read.

Pleasant romantic stories for an afternoon. From the days when there were few women in the west and no life was truly complete without one. This was a very popular, acceptable practice.

I enjoyed this series more than I thought I would. A series of short stories, based on a period of American history that no one gives a lot of thought to, I found the perspective of the men particularly insightful. A good read.

Loved these stories of mail order bridesMy favorite story was the last one in the series. The family's courage,faith and strength as they met with all of the struggle's and difficulties of traveling across country in wagon trains came through beautifully in her writing. I laughed and I cried. 😄😢😅

Quite enjoyed these stories and loved that they all linked a bit together.. Just the right length for a quick read.

I haven't read the stories yet but am very disappointed in this product. I thought I was receiving a series containing 6 books. It is actually one book -- not even 300 pages -- containing a collection of 6 short stories. 15.98 is a ripoff! I will avoid anything in the future having to do with Faith-Ann Smith and/or hopemeadowpublishing! Way overpriced and misleading!

Dull and repetitive stories. Read one then just change the names and you have the next one. I could actually feel brain cells rebelling and sacrificing themselves. Danielle Steel will seem like fine literature after this drivel.

The main title is a bit misleading, as it is mainly about cenobitic monks and not hermits. There is so little literature on the topic that this should be welcomed by anyone interested in the history of food. I just wish it were more complete.

The blurb on the back cover calls this book sparkling and it really is. Very interesting and easy to read. The author does a wonderful job of putting hermits and monks and their worlds in context. I loved reading the book and am going to try that tree bark recipe if I am ever starving in the wilderness!

I really liked the book! Totally met my expectations and am hopeful for a sequel to bring us to current day practices. Not only enjoyed reading it, I would have enjoyed researching and writing it. I think Mr. Jotischky did a better job than I would have, though.

I think, the book covers interesting topic. Many interesting informations about monastic life, medieval diets and some monastic recipes are included.

Here is yet ANOTHER book in which an author picked a tired, exhausted topic they were interested in and wrote an entire book about--in this case, the topic was about monks. The first chapters cover the usual: what monks are, what they did as monks, who were some famous monks, and, then eventually what they ate. Unfortunately, the book is boring to distraction. By page 90, I just about gave up since almost every paragraph was a repeat of the pervious one. I was frustrated that I actually bought the book. When you have headings like 'Bread,' 'Lentils,' and 'Beans,' I suppose the book speaks for itself. I'd check this one out at the library first before buying it.

The focus was always on “how do we fix this.” They don’t have the answers but they do have a better way of discussing the problem, I’ll tell you that.While listening I discovered that I’m more socially liberal and mostly politically centrist. But that’s not even important. Sure you can say that politics isn’t your thing and I’ll use the nuance I learned from Beth and Sarah to not judge or shame you for it. Do you have idiot bosses or coworkers? Because this book has helped me at work when I seemingly hit a stalemate with coworkers and superiors. This book has literally retrained my brain on how to focus on the problem and unified ways to solve them.I cannot recommend it enough. You should listen to the show too :)
