#30,625 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

Great new voice in a cozy mystery series that develops around 4 cats and the humans that are in their lives. I found it a delightful, smooth read. The author creates characters.. feline and human in such a way that they come alive to the reader. I laughed out loud at some of the antics of these feline sleuths! I look forward to reading more of Karen Golden's books. Hopefully we will hear more about the cats in their new environment soon.

The basic plot had potential, but the writing was very uneven. I was a fan of Lilian Jackson Braun's popular "Cat Who" books and had lived in Indiana, so really wanted to like this book set in Indiana. After reading it, however, I'm glad I only paid 99 cents for the Kindle version. My main criticisms: the author tried to mimic Braun's Cat Who series, but without the quality of writing. She used the same premise as Braun (city dweller inherits unexpected wealth but must move to a small town and live in big house). She used some of the same cat behavior from Braun's books (the cat's "death dance" and a cat chewing on potential clues). She tried to copy accents, such as Braun used for a Scottish character, but in this book it just came across as contrived and annoying (her friend's psuedo-Irish sayings). Even the title, "The Cat That...," is a rip-off of Braun's "Cat Who" series titles. When I read Braun's books, I felt as though I knew her characters and small town. When I finished this book, I had no interest in reading any more about these annoying characters or the sad little Indiana town.

I was looking forward to this book as a light read, so I didn't have high expectations. I thought that if this was good, maybe I'd try out the rest of her books in this category. But for the first half of the book (literally), nothing happened. I mean ... nothing. Sure, there was a move to Erie. There was a snowstorm. But as much as I love cats (I have two cute ones!), it was tiring after a while to just read a bunch of descriptions of what her cats were saying (basically, "waugh!" over and over again). I wanted the plot to move forward, not read a diary of someone.I'm okay with slow books, but there literally was no point in the first half of the book. The author could have summarized it in less than 4 sentences, and it made me put down this book, finish two other books, and then come back because I don't like leaving things unfinished. Finally, at around 60% of the book, the actual murder happened. But then solving the murder was just so predictable, and not actual "solving" happened. Literally, at the end, the chief comes up to the main character and says, "Welp, the person admitted to the murder, so you're all set."Karen Golden tries to convince the readers to read more by inserting a hint of potential foul play with the aunt's death, but if the second book is as drab and boring as this one, then I most definitely will not read it. The way that the characters talked was dry, and the attempt at romance was just ... not working out at all. I think the idea was that nothing romantic would happen? But was there supposed to be tension? This story could have been written in a page, and it's a shame I wasted time on this.

The initial plot of The Cat that Surfed the Net caught my attention, but over half-way through the book and nothing happened except a great deal of exposition. The murder does not happen until over 60% of the book is read and once the murder happens it is at 94%. The murderer confesses very quickly and everyone goes to take a nap.

The mystery part of the story was good. The characters were consistent and well written. I guess from the description I was hoping these books would be a replacement for the "Cat Who" series in my reading collection. The basic premise is the same- person inherits large amount of money with caveat that they have to move to a strange town and live in a strange place. But there the comparison ends. What is quirky and fun and lovable in the hands of Lilian Jackson Braun becomes tedious and over-descriptive here. If the others are like this one, I probably won't purchase more. There's a lot of blow-by-blow description of everything the cats do, which, for the most parts, are all the things all cats everywhere do. There's also a lot of blow-by-blow description of what the characters do, including a long section in the middle which describes a drive through bad weather, getting a hotel room, and eating out that has nothing at all to do with the story being told or the growth of the characters. (But obviously is real life experience from someone who has traveled with cats!) I'll probably try another to see if the writing tightens up, and am hoping it does. I like the concept and I need a new cat mystery series in my life.

I like any book that has a cat in it and this one has four. Unfortunately, they have very little to do with this story. Another problem: the murder doesn't take place until 2/3 of the way through the book. Until then, you have two rather silly women running around terrified of their own shadows. Finally, two corpses show up and one is so random it just had me shaking my headUsually these little cozy mysteries make me laugh and hold my interest throughout but this one was a very hard read and l was glad when I got to its very bad, poorly written ending. I don't know or care if this book will have a sequel because this author is off my reading list.
