It's Robert McGinnis. What more needs to be said? If you're a fan, you'll love this. If you're not, you might turn into one.

If readers have been followers of this remarkable illustrator for some time, they may already have a copy of "Tapestry: The Paintings of Robert McGinnis" published back in the year 2000. Such readers may be wondering if that book is entirely redundant with this one and if this one is worth having. Well, I think it is. Any career overview of this type has certain highlights that need to be acknowledged, and those images are present in both books, but this volume seems determined not to present them in the same way. Images that appeared as quarter-page reproductions in "Tapestry," the front cover illustration, for example, may be a full page here. One image that appeared as a page and a half in the older book is cropped much closer to the figure and is reproduced as a double page spread in this volume. This book also reproduces dozens of illustrations that are not present in the older book. This one includes some sketches and photo-reference. It also features an interview with McGinnis that offers some insight into what the illustration game was like back when scarcely a week went by without the appearance of a McGinnis illustration somewhere. If you are a McGinnis fan you will NOT be disappointed by this book, whether you have a copy of "Tapestry" or not.

I was a casual admirer of McGinnis' art from his Hard Case Crime covers and rolled the dice and picked this book up. As soon as I was twenty or so pages in I realized that I previously had had NO IDEA of the depth of this man's talent! This is a truly INCREDIBLE book, and one recommend to ANY fan of American art and illustration. It's a seemingly comprehensive overview of McGinnis' career, from hippie-dippie sleaze PBO covers to Mike Shayne series art, Guideposts illustrations to late-career Hard Case masterworks. Excellent reproductions (many full page) throughout, with sketches, roughs, and preliminaries accompanying brief biographical text. TRULY ESSENTIAL.

Fans of Robert E McGinnis' art will be delighted with this book. And those who don't know who he is will be surprised by his stunning work.Born in 1926, McGinnis started his career early in 1947. However he didn't start painting paperback covers until 1958. But after he started, he has painted over a thousand of them, on top of other illustrations he has created for movies and magazines. He is one of the great illustrations who is as inspiring as Norman Rockwell, Andrew Wyeth, Coby Whitmore, Drew Struzan. This 176-page hardcover features over six decades worth of splendid work. The paper quality used is low gloss and reproduction quality is fantastic. Bravo to publisher Titan Books.Actually, there was another McGinnis artbook published in 2000 titled Tapestry: The Paintings of Robert E. McGinnis. There are some duplication of artworks but this book is still worth getting because it has included works from 2000 to 2014, Yes, McGinnis is still painting today. The book starts of with a lengthy interview by author Art Scott with the artist and is followed by the galleries of artworks. You'll get to see the cover art that has adorned paperback titles of the past, iconic movie posters such as for Breakfast at Tiffany's and James Bond, works for various magazines, his personal paintings of nudes, Western and contemporary landscapes. Among which you'll see the many stunning 'McGinnis women'. His style, sense of aesthetics and colours are amazing. One cover was deemed to saucy and had a sticker pasted strategically over the offending bit.The accompanying text has McGinnis sharing his creative process, insights from his career and some stories behind the selected pieces of works. He talks about elaborate wraparound art that require meticulous research and extensive model shoots, movie posters that require countless iterations, paintings for men's magazines where he did not want to be associated with, and other interesting stuff. Not only that, I also enjoyed reading the descriptions of those paperbacks, such as one that has "Man, she had a shape to make corpses kick open caskets - and she was dead set on giving me rigor mortis."Most of the time, the artworks are reproduced in their raw form without the other forms of typography or designs. Even when actual book covers are used, the art is not obscured because McGinnis had taken into account the space for the book titles and other text elements. This wonderful artbook will make a fine addition to the shelves of any art lovers.Highly recommended. One of my favourites for 2014.(See more pictures of the book on my blog. Just visit my Amazon profile for the link.)

I'm sure I read numerous novels with McGinnis covers back in my teen years without ever making the connection. Viewing this collection took me back to those days, suddenly linking all those covers in my retro mind. Best of all, not only is the art just as terrific as in its day but the book offers fascinating insights such as McGinnis' repeated use of a hero who was a ringer for James Coburn, or a cover McGinnis illustrated with a naked woman (her breasts and crotch blocked from view by arms and other items) which the publisher made him repaint a bikini top and bottom on the woman; after publication, once McGinnis had his painting back, he repainted the bikini back out. Fun stuff!

I have recently taken an interest in illustrators. R.E.M. spent several decades creaing book cover art for mystery and adventure book series, such as, Perry Mason, Carter Brown, Mike Shayne, etc. His art for magazines is also sampled here. As well as some gallery work. If you are looking for some in-depth account of his life this is not the book you want. Frankly, I would be surprised if that book exists. It is a nice overview of his art however.

Superbly reproduced artwork in a large format, which allows you to really appreciate art (most of which McGuiness made in surprisingly small formats to begin with). The text is excellent and informative, with many insights provided by the artist himself as the result of the author's interviews with him. I know I'm showing my age, but it really takes me back in time whenever I look at it.

Even if you don’t recognize his name, you’ve probably seen some of his art. McGinnis is a key figure in the history of movie and paperback promotions. This book is packed with examples of his commercial work, as well as his landscapes. Some drafts are also included. Thoughtful text provides information about his career and creative process. This is a beautiful volume – would make an excellent gift.
