But Avani's strong will leads to a conflict with a rival troop, and, suddenly, her membership in Star Scouts is at stake. This is a gorgeous book, with lush imagery that brings to mind Craig Thompson's Space Dumplins. However, the plot is lacking, as the rivalry at Camp Andromeda follows a predictable us vs. them—narrative. The characters have heart aplenty, but their frequent use of toilet humor relegates the book to a younger audience. Avani herself is a difficult heroine for whom to root: the story sets up readers to dislike the girls with whom Avani clashes at Camp Andromeda, yet the protagonist delivers as many insults and nasty actions as she receives. My 8- and 9-year-olds (one boy and one girl) absolutely LOVED this book. They devoured it in one night and both came to tell me how much they enjoyed it. My daughter was especially excited about the Indian representation, as my kids are half Indian. Thank you! This is one of those books that is sorely needed in today's children's publishing landscape.
Filled with colorful characters, hi-fi hijinks and sci-fi scenarios of every stripe, STAR SCOUTS is a real delight. Mike Lawrence's story is simple and fun, and his art is extraordinary from the opening hook to the last big twist. I've given STAR SCOUTS to four kids so far and they've adored every page. What's cool is that their parents love it too. Glad there's a sequel on the way, as STAR SCOUTS creates a great universe for many new adventures. 5 STARS.

Vibrant art, great characters, and a fun story. I enjoyed it, but more importantly my 4-year-old son loved it. We met the author at a book festival and he's a really nice guy.
Highly recommended for anyone with a fun and active imagination. My son read it cover to cover, and is now starting again.
My 9 year old daughter loved it. As soon as she finished Star Scouts, she asked when is the sequel out and what else has Mike Lawrence written.
Beautiful art. Captivating story for all ages. Perfect gift. Fun!
This is a great book! The story is engaging and funny and the art is wonderful. I read it and really enjoyed it. My kids (ages 10 and 12) loved it and have already read it multiple times. We can't wait for the next one.
