My family has traditionally bought this magazine for decades. But, I have to admit, we don’t actually use it too much for frost dates and the weather. For us, its real value is all the articles on every topic a nature-oriented person could want, and there is typically something for everyone. The 2019 issue is packed with good ones, again. Like many, I purchased the Old Farmer’s Almanac (OFA) for weather predictions but it’ so much more! Do you want to know how to make your own pickles or sausage at home? Or grow plants by the moon phase? Did you know there was a total Lunar Eclipse in January the whole USA can see?! Or maybe you want to try the award winning recipes of 2018. Whether you are a buff for obscure scientific facts, a homemaker, a farmer or, like many of us, none of these but just want to dabble in the old timey arts this OFA is for you. Really, something for everyone. Interesting and so much fun.
I have been purchasing one of these for the last 10-12 years. The Almanac has proven to be 80% accurate; last year it was 83% accurate. I plan trips and other events around it's weather forecasts. It's not a day-to-day, but gives an overall summary of chunks of time. My children will tell you we always had great beach weather, and both of my kids had outdoor weddings with perfect weather. And this November snow that seems to have caught everyone off-guard? It was predicted in the Almanac!
I buy an Old Farmer's Almanac every year. I love all the article and lore inside of them. I like to trace our actual weather with the forecast for our area. I love it when they are the same. Gardening by the moon is something I do every year since I found out about it and, believe it or not, it works! I buy several almamacs to get a clearer vision of what will go on in the weather and when fishing is good!
Another September, another OFA.I've been reading this for decades and look forward to it every year.
Admittedly the weather forecast are not reliable or relevant. However there is a wealth of knowledge contained in this book that is useful for any household. I find the astronomy and astrological data helpful, along with cooking and gardening tips. I also really enjoy the calendar pages and historical data they contain.
This is my favorite of the available "Farmers Almanacs." In addition to the calendars and the weather predictions, it includes a lot of great articles about growing things, astronomy, history, animals - each year's issue is a little different but I have not been disappointed in probably 25 or 30 years of reading this almanac. Are the weather predictions right? Not always, but they're usually in the ballpark.
I bought this as a novelty as I had never read a Farmers Almanac. I'm an avid gardener, so thought it might have some useful information. At first glance, was surprised at how many advertisements this book has. Didn't count pages, but seemed like at least 20% ads. I guess that helps keep the price down. Still an interesting read, so worth the price in my opinion.
